Team New Zealand routs Oracle Team USA to win America's Cup

New Zealand dominated Monday's final of the 35th America's Cup, reclaiming sailing's most prestigious prize and global sport's oldest trophy.

Emirates Team New Zealand steamrolled Oracle Team USA on Monday in Bermuda, 7-1, to win the 35th America's Cup and retake the title after 14 years.

Helmsman Peter Burling and Emirates Team New Zealand have won the America's Cup by routing software tycoon Larry Ellison's Oracle Team USA.

New Zealand's voice of the America's Cup couldn't have summed up Emirates Team NZ's win better.

Even after losing two races on Sunday, Spithill was not in any mood to give up, conceding that the U.S. crew had been outsailed by Burling and his five Kiwi teammates, but vowing to come out fighting again today and take one race at a time. However, it was not to be.

"We would like to pass on our massive congratulations to Peter, Blair, Andy and Josh, as well as Guy Endean who was a member of the 2013 Red Bull Youth America's Cup-winning NZL Sailing Team".

But that year Team New Zealand chief Grant Dalton was already eyeing Burling as a likely candidate for another America's Cup campaign.

"The way we did it, the accolades we're getting internationally for our innovation and the quality of our sailors, people are saying New Zealand just bundles excellence", Busfield said in a telephone interview from Bermuda.

"The future of high performance sailing, whether it's the Olympics or America's Cup, is in a great position".

"A few years ago, it was absolutely brutal for the team, and it was a hard pill to swallow", Ashby told The New York Times.

"They saw us as cowboys. we were to a point", Dalton said, adding that there were times when the team had not been able to pay salaries but had managed to keep going. "I think for ourselves it's just sinking in".

"It was a big risk, I guess, but we knew we had to risk in order to ultimately win this America's Cup".

"ATEED, on behalf of Auckland Council, will work with Emirates Team New Zealand and other stakeholders to hold a parade in the central city to mark their achievements when they return to Auckland".

Yachts that compete in the America's Cup are now made substantially of carbon fiber composites, including in the "wing" sails, hulls and a variety of other components.

David expects to see the level of interest in sailing increase and encouraged any potential new sailors to contact their local yacht club to find out how they can learn to sail.
