South Africa start campaign with facile win over Pakistan

Pakistan women's cricket team will take on South Africa in their opening game of the ICC Women's World Cup 2017 at Leicester.

The South Africans put Pakistan into bat after winning the toss at Grace Road in Leicester.

But targets of around 200 now rarely present problems for leading women's sides, although this one did leave South Africa with a national record World Cup chase. Ismail was awarded the player of the match for her all-round performance.

In response, Laura Wolvaardt (52) and Lizelle Lee (60) gave a solid 113 run opening stand that came off 154 deliveries.

But their wickets were the first of seven to fall for just 64 runs as the Proteas collapsed to 177-7, still requiring a run-a-ball 30 to win from the final five overs. But Shabnim Ismail struck three fours in the penultimate over as South Africa won with six balls to spare.

Pakistan played the South Africans in their first match of the ICC World Cup today and put together 206 for 8 with Nahida Khan adding 79, highest ever by any Pakistani in Women s World Cup.

Javeria Khan (17), Bismah Maroof (10), Nain Abidi (22), Asmavia Iqbal (27) all got starts but failed to carry on with Nahida too dismissed in the 39th over.

"I looked calm but I was very nervous out there", said Ismail.
