Sentencing hearing today for ex-nurse serial killer Elizabeth Wettlaufer

A Canadian nurse who used insulin to kill eight elderly patients in Ontario care homes has been sentenced to life in prison, local media report.

Hoskins and Naqvi offered condolences on behalf of the government to Wettlaufer's victims, but said despite her crimes the 78,000 residents of Ontario's publicly funded long-term care homes are safe.

There is a chance she would never have been caught if she had not spoke of the crimes during her stay at a Toronto psychiatric hospital.

They said Mary Zurawinski was "adamant" that she would live to see her 100th birthday, and that Wettlaufer has robbed her of that opportunity.

"During this immensely hard time, I commend the government for having the courage to put these events under the microscope", says Grinspun. Wettlaufer claimed she was getting messages from God to kill the patients. He said he's dealt with depression, high blood pressure and a range of health issues that have put him in the hospital six times since his mother's death. "I ask why, because she didn't eat all the blueberry pie and ice cream?"

She felt driven by some urge when she was nursing at Caressant Care in Woodstock, Meadow Park in London, and while working for nursing agencies providing home care and support.

"It is a complete betrayal of trust when a caregiver does not prolong life, but terminates it", Justice Bruce Thomas said.

"You can not blame yourselves", he said.

But the granddaughter of another victim, Gladys Millard, said she doesn't have any interest in a long and drawn-out public inquiry that would sap taxpayer dollars. There are a lot of old people here, she told her niece, even though Zarawinski was one of the oldest residents in the facility.

It won't be the first time family members have heard from Wettlaufer - her video confession was played for the court after she pleaded guilty.

The judge was quick to note that Wettlaufer may never be granted parole due to the nature of her crimes.

"Sorry is much too small a word", she said flatly, under the watchful eye of the families, while she stood in the prisoner's box.

Elizabeth Wettlaufer, 49, is expected to address family members of her victims Monday in a Woodstock, Ont., court, her lawyer told CBC News.

Wettlaufer murdered her victims by injecting them with a lethal dose of insulin.

The court heard about the lives of her victims before they found themselves changed by illness, dementia and Alzheimers. "I was doubled over in pain in my stomach.Just such pain".

Bertram wrote that she has become a recluse since the incident, afraid of everyone, including her own shadow, and has lost all relationships with her family. "I am not sure why but I will use my life the best I can".
