Rainbows, and politics too, at pride parade

Police detained some 44 people at an LGBT Pride march in Istanbul's Taksim Square on June 25, which was previously banned by the Istanbul's Governor's Office for the third consecutive year.

Members of the city's LGBT community have reached out to her "voicing their concern" about the optics of Toronto police officers marching in the NY parade when there is turmoil at home. Small groups of people gathered in the streets holding rainbow flags.

The celebratory tone of gay pride marches from San Francisco to Istanbul on Sunday were undergirded by an atmosphere of political expression and protest. It also used plastic bullets and tear gas to disperse the groups that were gathered on sidewalks around the area.

In Minneapolis, organizers of Sunday's Twin Cities Pride Parade initially asked the police department to limit participation following the acquittal of police officer Jeronimo Yanez in the death of Castile.

Grand marshals for the NYC Pride 2017 include the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and its NY office (NYCLU); Brooke Guinan, the first transgender women in the NYC fire department; Krishna Stone, an HIV/AIDS activist; and Geng Le, a gay rights activist from China.

Istanbul LGBTI+ Pride Week on Saturday said in a statement that Istanbul's governor banned the event because "the application for the event has not been done properly".

Besides Taiwan, the world has changed significantly since the first Pride Parade in 1970, one year after the patrons of Stonewall Inn fought against police who purposely raided the bar in June, 1969.

Police established checkpoints in the area on Sunday, preventing groups from entering Istiklal Avenue and turning back people who they deemed were associated with the march.

"Things are changing quickly and we have to take a stand and be noticed", Reyes' husband, Paul Brady, added.

New York City spokesman James Fallarino said if there are any disruptions or protests during the event, "We're going to make sure we do everything in our power to respect the people who are disrupting or protesting and to respect their message".

But in 2015, police dispersed crowds using tear gas and water cannons after a last-minute ban.

NYC Pride organizers said they have a policy against restricting groups from participating.

"We will not allow this march which calls itself a pride march but in reality is normalizing and encouraging immorality and tawdryness that touches the nerves of society", the statement said. In 2016, amid a series of deadly attacks blamed on the Islamic State extremist group or on Kurdish militants, the event was banned again.
