Polygamous sect leader Lyle Jeffs captured after 1 year

Lyle took over as the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS) Church from his brother, Warren Jeffs, who is serving a sentence for child sex abuse.

Jeffs's brother, Warren Jeffs, is now in prison, though is believed to still be leading his sect, the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

He had been on the run since he fled house arrest on June 18, 2016, in Salt Lake City, awaiting trial with other leaders of the religious sect on charges they diverted money from a federal government food assistance program for the poor, authorities said. He slipped out of an ankle monitor and has been on the run ever since.

Polygamous sect leader Jeffs was captured Wednesday, June 14, 2017, night in South Dakota after being on the run for nea.

"He said his first name was Jeffs, his middle name was Lyle and his last name was Steed", said Haug.

The FBI said an off-duty Yankton, SD, police detective followed a tip about someone who matched Jeffs' description.

"When you flee a federal indictment, the long of the arm will eventually catch up to you", said U.S. Attorney of Utah, John Huber.

Barnhart said the agency is working to determine if the unidentified tipster will get a reward.

After Jeffs sold two pairs of Leatherman pliers for $37 and provided his ID on Tuesday, a concerned employee at River City Treasures and Pawn in Yankton looked up online the name he had been given and realized the man was wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Lyle Jeffs is facing trial for food stamp fraud.

Jeffs, 57, is expected to be extradited to Utah in the next couple of days "now that he is back in the loving embrace of law enforcement", Barnhart said. Prosecutors opposed that move, arguing Jeffs was a flight risk. He said Jeffs was alone in the vehicle and that he doesn't know why Jeffs was in the area. Barnhart said it is unclear if Jeffs spent any time there. He says he provided officers with store video and pawn paperwork.

Lyle Jeffs is the brother of Warren Jeffs, who made national headlines as a leader of the same polygamous sect. "We had very serious concerns".

"The money from the alleged scheme, prosecutors say, helped finance the purchase of paper products, a tractor and a truck - all of which are ineligible under SNAP rules".

The defendants denied wrongdoing and said they were just sharing food as part of their communal living practices.

While he was a fugitive, nine of the 10 other people charged in the high-profile bust in February 2016 took plea deals while one person had his charges dismissed.
