More Han Solo Movie Clash Details: Acting Coach Hired, Editor Fired

Last week, news broke that directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller had exited the Untitled Han Solo film following months of conflict with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy over the comedic tone of the film. The Hollywood Reporter has been gathering more details on what has been going on, but first and foremost, it should probably be stated that Lord and Miller didn't leave the movie, so much as they were removed from their roles by Lucasfilm Boss Kathleen Kennedy.

Going back to the different filmmaking styles, sources say there were "deep fundamental philosophical differences" in how the film was being shot "and the directors felt they were being given 'zero creative freedom.'" Not only that but they were given extraordinarily hard time restraints and "were never given enough days for each scene from the very beginning". Now, a new report dives deep into the reported issues that Lucasfilm had with Lord and Miller regarding the way they wanted to make the movie and how it clashed with their own vision.

Ehrenreich's acting coach wasn't the only late-stage hire - the project's editor, Chris Dickens, was replaced by frequent Ridley Scott collaborator Pietro Scalia.

The highly anticipated "Star Wars" spinoff, slated for a May 25, 2018 release, follows the adventures of the wisecracking swashbuckler Han Solo as a young pilot, played by Alden Ehrenreich. Kasdan is said also to have been unhappy with the limited shots and displeased that Lord and Miller were calling out lines for the actors to try from behind the monitor rather than sticking with the script that he had written in collaboration with his son. Tony Gilroy was brought in to polish the script for the reshoots, taking over as Gareth Edwards remained on as director, with Gilroy shadowing him in post-production. Kasdan apparently was unimpressed that Lord and Miller were trying out improvised dialogue at all, being annoyed that his screenplay was being ignored in favor of off-the-cuff material. (Hiring a coach is not unusual; hiring one that late in production is.) Lord and Miller suggested writer-director Maggie Kiley, who worked with them on 21 Jump Street. Academy Award-winner Ron Howard has replaced them. Another source close to the project says that Lord and Miller are very supportive. She didn't even like the way they folded their socks...

The previous Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, had some behind-the-scenes difficulties as well.
