Gunman who shot top GOP congressman had history of arrests

St. Clair County Ill. Sheriff's Department shows James T. Hodgkinson. Officials said Hodgkinson has been identified as the man who opened fire on Republican lawm

Hodgkinson, 66, a resident of Belleville, Illinois, filled his Facebook page with screeds against Trump and a year ago against Hillary Clinton, the Democrat who won the nomination but lost the general election to Trump. That case was dismissed.

"I am sickened by this despicable act".

"I just want to let people know that he wasn't evil", said Walsh. Calls to the Belleville Police Department were not immediately returned.

The shooter who opened fire on Republican congressmen at baseball field in Virginia had blasted GOP lawmakers and supported taxing the rich for years, according to a review of more than two dozen letters he wrote to his local hometown newspaper.

Asked about her husband's decision to leave for an extended period of time, Hodgkinson said that her daughter and two-year-old granddaughter had recently moved home.

At an emotional press conference outside the couple's home in Belleville, Illinois, Sue Hodgkinson struggled for words to describe events running up to the shooting and said her husband, known also as Tom, had told her he had gone to the nation's capital to "work on taxes". Three others, a GOP congressional aide, a U.S. capitol police officer and a lobbyist were also injured by gunfire. Mrs. Hodgkinson said her husband sold nearly everything from his businesses before he moved to the east coast.

"Please take a moment today to cherish those you love and always remember those who serve and keep us safe", he said.

The three other shooting victims are recovering at Washington hospitals.

The FBI has taken control of the crime scene, which is located some 7 miles away from the White House in Washington, D.C.

Scalise is undergoing surgery and his injury is not life-threatening, his office said in a statement. "He is grateful for the fearless actions of U.S. Capitol Police, first responders, and colleagues". "I know I speak for the entire country in saying that my hopes and prayers are that Rep. Scalise, congressional staff and the Capitol Police officers who were wounded make a quick and full recovery".

Sen. Jeff Flake said Matt Mika, director of government relations for Tyson foods who practices with the team, seemed to be the most seriously injured.
