Face-off between Chinese, Indian troops in Sikkim

No dialogue till India withdraws troops China

"China is committed to developing bilateral relations between China and India, but also firmly defend their legitimate rights and interests".

China's building of the road was completely an act of sovereignty on its own territory, India has no right to interfere, it said.

Transgressions and incursions between Indian and Chinese troops are not uncommon along the 4,057-km Line of Actual Control, but are mostly played down by security agencies.

In a major provocation, the Chinese troops on Monday entered India in the Sikkim sector and jostled with Indian Army personnel guarding the Indo-Sino frontier, besides destroying two Indian bunkers.

"This seriously damaged peace and tranquillity in the border areas".

In New Delhi, external affairs ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay had said that some difficulties were being experienced in the movement of pilgrims through Nathu La and that India is taking up the matter with China.

"China hopes India will meet it halfway, not do anything to complicate the border issues and jointly maintain the good momentum of relations", the defence ministry said. Earlier, China had stopped pilgrims from visiting Kailash Mansarover, citing the reason that roads have been damaged due to floods and landslides.

After the India-China war of 1962, the area has been under the Indian Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, which is the border guarding force and has a camp 15km from the worldwide border. Finally, the Chinese side agreed to a meeting on June 20.

However, sources say that in the last two years, there has been a dip in such confrontations between Indian and Chinese soldiers.

It was then that the Chinese side conveyed to their Indian counterparts that Indian pilgrims, who were on their way to Kailash Mansarovar, would not be allowed to cross into Tibet through the Nathu-la Pass, PTI cited sources as saying. They waited at the base camp and tried to cross again on June 23 but were denied permission by the Chinese officials. This was the second route agreed by the two counties for the Kailash Yatra.
