Britain's David Davis 'pretty sure' he'll get good Brexit deal

Davis said it would be catastrophic to hold a leadership contest now, just as he's trying to negotiate the terms of Britain's withdrawal from the European Union.

"It is absolutely vital that the Scottish Government has a seat at the negotiating table so that Scotland's interests can be protected in the Brexit talks".

Reports over the weekend also suggested that the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, is being lined up as a possible "caretaker" Prime Minister to see the United Kingdom through the Brexit negotiations.

And, again, Davis sounded very cautious about the prospects of getting the kind of agreement Prime Minister Theresa May has pledged.

The government is today due to publish the detail of its plan to secure the rights of more than three million European Union citizens living in the United Kingdom, and one million Britons in Europe, after Prime Minister Theresa May presented an outline to European Union leaders in Brussels on Friday.

When asked by the BBC's Andrew Marr whether May's ouster would be catastrophic, Davis replied "Yes. Yes". Number one, I happen to think we have got a very good Prime Minister.

"I think she's very good, she makes good decisions, she's bold, she takes her time".

Brexit Secretary David Davis said that opposition to the Repeal Bill, which will transfer European Union law into British statute at the point of Brexit, would risk causing chaos in areas of government where thousands of European regulations are now in effect. He said his message to any colleagues agitating for change was: "Get on with the day job. You can be sure there'll be a deal, (but) the deal I want is the free trade agreement, the customs agreement and so on".

Davis also suggested a transitional period of one or two years after Brexit negotiations conclude was more likely than the four years called for by the chancellor.

The remarks came after chancellor Philip Hammond said no deal would be "very, very bad" for the UK.

She faces her first major test next week when MPs vote on her legislative agenda, traditionally seen as a test of confidence in the government. "We are very divided on Europe, ' he added".

"I think Philip is the only plausible candidate for a couple of years, with DD [David Davis] running Brexit.

Asked if he had seen the Tories in such a 'mess" in the past, Mr Clarke said: 'I've seen nothing like this.

She said: "We haven't said we'll have control of free movement of people, you can't necessarily have complete control, but what we want is to be able to have fair migration that avoids people's jobs being undercut".

May has faced persistent questions over whether she can still command authority as leader after the humiliating loss of her party's Commons majority in the snap General Election.

"He told me that if Theresa May could be prime minister, so could he, " the source said.
