Airline vet to lead Amtrak in a summer of repairs, reckoning

Amtrak announced Monday

Amtrak on Monday named a former Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) chief executive as its next president and CEO as the US passenger rail carrier makes major repairs at its busiest USA hub.

Wick Moorman, who became CEO in September and recruited Anderson, will remain on the job through the end of the year and then become an advisor to the company, Amtrak said in a statement.

Anderson, who's been in the airline industry for 25 years, formerly headed Delta and Northwest Airlines.

That's when Moorman will become an adviser to Amtrak. Moorman, a longtime freight railroad executive, will serve as co-CEO with Anderson through the end of the year, overseeing some ongoing Amtrak projects, including critical fix work at New York's Penn Station.

Fix work is set to begin in July.

"Richard brings to Amtrak his experience running one of the largest global commercial air carriers".

"It is an honor to join Amtrak at a time when passenger rail service is growing in importance in America", Anderson said.

A change of leadership for Amtrak. "I'm passionate about building strong businesses that create the best travel experience possible for customers".

Anderson, who retired past year after a decade at the helm of Delta, will start at Amtrak on July 12. "The board also appreciates all that Wick continues to do to improve Amtrak's safety culture and strengthen our operating performance, including the important renewal work at New York Penn Station".

Moorman also praised Anderson as a leader and said he isn't "afraid to face challenges head-on". "He has helped companies navigate bankruptcy, a recession, mergers and acquisitions, and 9/11", said Moorman.

WASHINGTON (AP) - A decade after setting Delta Air Line on a post-bankruptcy resurgence, the airline's former chairman and chief executive officer is taking on another transportation challenge: Amtrak.

He acknowledged in April that "problems with our tracks in Penn Station were a cause" of two recent derailments, including one characterized as minor that nevertheless left eight of 21 tracks out of service for four days.
