Valentino Rossi wins Dutch Grand Prix at Assen, Petrucci 2nd

Rossi eager to get back on right track

It wasn't all good news for Yamaha though as Maverick Vinales lost the championship lead to Andrea Dovizioso after crashing out at the final chicane, with tricky conditions catching a number of riders out.

The 38-year-old Rossi finished with a time of 41:41.149, averaging 169.9 kph, reports Efe.

At lights out, it was Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) took the holeshot from his first ever pole position despite a better start from Marquez, and the Frenchman led the field away as Rossi took Petrucci for third.

"This place is always special".

Vinales (111 points), who will start 11th in the race, narrowly leads the 2017 MotoGP riders' standings with seven of 18 races completed, just seven points ahead of Dovizioso.

Rossi managed the race masterfully, edging Petrucci and Marquez for the win.

The white flag came out with just eight laps left as rain began to affect the area around the track.

An early superstar to move up from outside the top 20 on the grid into seventh was Fabio Di Giannantonio (Honda) who then crashed out; he was OK but the chasing pack got shuffled as they avoided the fallen Honda - all except Enea Bastianini (Honda), who went down and later retired.

Triple world champion Marc Marquez was third for Honda. Rossi is now third with 108, while Marquez has 104.

Italians Rossi and Petrucci fought out a duel of their own over the final laps, with the latter holding the lead until three laps to go when Rossi passed at the chicane.

In the first ten riders, we also had, Dovizioso, Jack Miller, Karel Abraham, Loris Baz, Andrea Iannone and Aleix Espargaro. Modifications to the circuit in 2005/6 saw the length of the championship's longest serving track cut from over 6 km down to its current lap of 4.5 km.

Zarco was the best finisher of those who pitted for a second bike, coming home in 14th despite a pitlane speeding penalty, ahead of Jorge Lorenzo - who also pitted and taking the final point in 15th, a lap down on Rossi.

Zarco pulled a half-second gap in the opening two laps while Scott Redding made his way through to fifth place and Vinales passed Crutchlow for ninth place.

Tatsuki Suzuki finished off his impressive weekend at Assen with an eighth place, ahead of the big name to lose out in the final corners - Championship leader Mir.
