South Koreans Hold Mass March to Denounce THAAD Weapons System

27 2016 shows panelists discussing North Korea's nuclear issue at the forum on unification co-hosted by Yonhap News Agency and the Presidential Committee for Unification Preparation

U.S. Forces Korea Commander Vincent Brooks, said in November past year that the THAAD battery will be deployed here within eight to 10 months.

While US Forces Korea is responsible for deployment costs and management of the South Korean THAAD system, the Aegis Ashore system in Japan would be paid for by the Japanese government and managed by the Japan Self-Defense Forces, with the US military operating THAAD X-band radar installed in Aomori in northern Japan and Kyoto in southern Japan.

The Japanese newspaper earlier claimed the Korean presidential office had refused to extend a warm welcome to U.S. Sen.

The advanced USA missile defense system has been operational in South Korea since early May 2017, and can intercept ballistic missiles launched by the regime of Kim Jong-un in North Korea.

The THAAD uses hit-to-kill technology in which kinetic energy destroys incoming warhead.

The missile defense system has previously been deployed in Guam and Hawaii as a measure against potential attacks from North Korea. "We have worked closely and have been fully transparent with the South Korean government throughout this process", United States Forces Korea wrote to the Korea Herald on Friday, when asked to respond to Moon's comments.

It's a twist on the typical pattern on the Korean Peninsula, where North Korean state media frequently issue reports about leader Kim Jong Un observing missile tests that it says are needed to combat South Korean and USA hostility.

The remarks came in reaction to a question by a U.S. journalist in a recent interview with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, in which the interviewer from U.S. broadcaster CBS stated it was not clear whether U.S. President Donald Trump would "agree to allow" his South Korean counterpart to negotiate with the North Koreans.

"The US trusts the South Korean official stance that the THAAD deployment was an Alliance decision".

The protest came as South Korea's new president Moon Jae-In heads to Washington next week for his first summit with Trump amid soaring tensions over Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions. And you want to do that.

Moon also called on China to do more to enforce global sanctions against North Korea. "Aren't you giving in to them?" asked the USA interviewer. South Korea also operates Aegis-equipped destroyers.
