Disability advocates protest outside McConnell's office over hea

Laura Halvorson, 33, also a protester, said many of those who participated in the die-in resisted arrest and were then removed by Capitol Police without their wheelchairs - images that attracted significant attention on social media.

The protest came on the same day Senate Republican leaders released their version of a bill that would repeal and replace President Barack Obama's health law.

As Capitol police conferred about what to do, the protesters chanted, "No cuts to Medicaid; save our liberty!".

The "die in" was organized by grassroots disability advocacy organization ADAPT, which engages in nonviolent civil disobedience to call attention to the civil rights of the disabled community across the country.

The Senate Republican health care bill would drastically cut Medicaid, the federal health care program for the poor.

Reporters tweeted photos of the protesters being carried out by Capitol Police.

Police arrested 43 protesters and took them to USCP headquarters for processing.

ADAPT organizer Bruce Darling said: 'Our lives and liberty shouldn't be stolen to give a tax break to the wealthy.

Protestors filled the hallway in the Russell Senate office building.

One of the protesters who was arrested, Mike Oxford, told CNN that the police acted professionally and used accessible paddy wagons with wheelchair lifts to transport the protesters with mobility disabilities. They said that they will release a statement with arrests and charges later today. The bill was met with backlash from Democrats for limiting funding for opioid abuse treatment centers, defunding Planned Parenthood for one year, and stopping the expansion of Medicaid.

The bill also gets rid of the individual mandate and its taxes but retains many of Obamacare's tax credits.
