Democratic lawmaker criticizes party brand, Pelosi

Trump tweeted Thursday morning as some Democrats call for their House minority leader's ouster after Tuesday's special election loss in Georgia.

"So you want me to sing my praises, is that what you're saying?" the California Democrat remarked dismissively to reporters when asked why she should stay on as leader. Well, I am a master legislator.

Democratic leaders said there are at least 70 other districts that will be easier terrain for them than the one in Georgia after post-census gerrymandering in GOP-led states created so many heavily Republican districts. "Unifying the district is important to me, and I think it's important to be able to govern effectively".

Pelosi's defiant comments came as Democrats remained angry and divided after throwing some $30 million into a House race in Georgia on Tuesday, only to end up with a loss that wasn't even very close.

As expected, Republicans also won a special election in the fifth congressional district of SC held to fill the seat vacated by budget director Mick Mulvaney.

All the races were on GOP-friendly terrain.

Despite spending tons of cash in the Georgia special election, Democrats still lost, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy told CNBC on Wednesday. They must pick up 24 seats to do so. But he said it should send a strong signal to Democrats thinking about taking back the White House. Representative Karen Handel said she hopes to reach out to her opponent's supporters in an effort to unify the 6th Congressional District.

But Pelosi taunted Rice and others urging her to step down, issuing what sounded like a warning on Thursday, saying, "when it comes to personal ambition and having fun on TV, have your fun. That would be very bad for the Republican Party - and please let Cryin' (Senate Minority Leader) Chuck (Schumer) stay!"

Trump was quick to celebrate the Georgia win and accused Democrats of standing in the way of a legislative agenda bogged down by infighting and investigations into whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation in last year's presidential election.

A study by the Congressional Budget Office has claimed that 23 million Americans may lose their healthcare under the House plan.

The California Democrat has always been a bogeywoman Republicans have used to motivate their base and to woo independents as the personification of liberal values and a reminder of why even if they may like their individual member or candidate, a vote for that Democrat would be a step toward putting Pelosi back in the speaker's chair.

"Usually they go after the most effective leaders because they want to diminish the opportunity that we have", Pelosi said. 'I personally think that time is now'.

Pelosi, 77, has led the House Democratic caucus for almost 15 years, from the minority into the majority and back again.

Earlier in November, Moulton was part of a group of House Democrats who pressured the caucus to delay the leadership vote, which allowed for Ryan to formally announce his candidacy.

"The Democratic Party needs new leadership now. It is possible that he could actually get re-elected if Democrats aren't careful".

Said Rep. Ed Perlmutter of Colorado: "Closing the gap is great, but it's not good enough, and we have to do better". "We don't agonize. We organize".

Hoyer said about the 2018 midterms, "I think we can win back the House, I really believe that".
