Trump confirms he's under investigation for firing former FBI Director James Comey

President Donald Trump is railing on Twitter about the

Mr. Trump's morning tweets included what seemed like a jab at former FBI Director Robert Mueller, the new Special Counsel for the Russian Federation probe, as he said the investigation was being "led by some very bad and conflicted people!" The official demanded anonymity because the official was not authorized to be named discussing the deliberations.

On Thursday afternoon, Trump sent two tweets attacking his former opponent.

Trump advisers and confidants describe the president as increasingly angry over the investigation, yelling at television sets in the White House carrying coverage and insisting he is the target of a conspiracy to discredit - and potentially end - his presidency.

It was unclear what prompted the warning, but the Trump administration has continuously hammered the media and political insiders over intelligence leaks.

The new allegations against Trump center on his own admission that he fired Comey because of the Russian Federation investigation, and suggestions he asked several top intelligence officials for their help altering the inquiry's direction.

Comey, who was sacked on May 9, told a Senate panel last week he believed Trump dismissed him to undermine the FBI's Russian Federation probe.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein issued a late-evening statement on Thursday calling on skepticism in the face of anonymous sources making allegations.

White House Senior Advisor Jared Kushner sits with his wife Ivanka Trump (L) at President Donald Trump's joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the East Room of the White House in Washington, U.S. March 17, 2017. The questions included whether he had confidence in Rosenstein, whether he plans to fire special counsel Robert Mueller and how he knows he's under investigation by the FBI. Shortly after Trump fired Comey, a Justice Department official tapped Mueller to take up the investigation as a special counsel.

The Associated Press and other news organizations have also reported that Kushner in December proposed a back channel between the Trump transition team and the Kremlin.

"As a matter of honor, and in light of his sworn testimony before Congress, Rosenstein would inevitably resign if confronted with a White House directive to dismiss the special counsel".

In response to the statement, former US Attorney Preet Bharara, whom Trump fired in March, tweeted early Friday morning that "Americans should also exercise caution before accepting as true lies about firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director & defamation of a war hero special counsel", references to criticisms Trump has levied against Mueller and James Comey.

In an address to the country, Trump struck a notably less partisan tone in response to his first major domestic crisis.

"You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"
