Trump Allies Try to Discredit Special Counsel Mueller After Initial Praise

Robert Mueller was appointed by the Justice Department as special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections

Robert Mueller, the former FBI Director who was appointed last month as special counsel to investigate connections between Donald Trump and Russia, is already in Trump's crosshairs less than one month after taking the job and starting his investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian operation to swing the 2016 presidential election in his favor, according to a close friend of Trump's.

"I think he's weighing that option", Ruddy said Monday on PBS NewsHour.

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel".

The meeting comes a day after lawmakers questioned Justice Department officials about the probe and Mueller's independence, and after a friend of Trump said the White House was considering firing Mueller. "(Attorney General) Jeff Sessions is recused here, so it would be up to (Deputy Attorney General) Rod Rosenstein, who was the person who just appointed Bob Mueller a couple of weeks ago".

The Washington Post originally reported that the probe led by special counsel Robert Mueller had been expanded to include Trump, who is suspected of having attempted to obstruct the investigation. Ledgett wrote a memo, according to the source, documenting a conversation in which President Donald Trump allegedly urged Rogers to help get the FBI to lift the cloud of the Russian Federation investigation. "I personally think it would be a significant mistake, even though I don't think there is a justification [for a special counsel]".

Also Wednesday, Senate Judiciary Chairman Charles Grassley said his panel will investigate the removal of former FBI Director James Comey and "any alleged improper partisan interference in law enforcement investigations".

Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, scoffed at the idea that the president might fire Mueller.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich spoke critically of special counsel Robert Mueller and his team, calling special counsels "very risky". Ruddy never spoke to the President regarding this issue. "If there were not good cause, it would not matter to me what anybody said", he said.

Mr Ruddy has also accused Mr Mueller of a conflict of interest, revealing the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director was a candidate to replace Mr Comey and was interviewed by Mr Trump only days before he was appointed as special independent counsel.

A spokesman for Mueller's team declined to comment.

"The attorney general is the one who has to fire him", said CNN's senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin on "Anderson Cooper 360". "Don't waste our time".
