Theresa May offers support package for London fire victims

Five people who died in the blaze have been identified and 74 were missing and presumed dead following the devastating blaze in the council-owned Grenfell tower block in west London.

Cundy explained that one of the reasons identification has been so hard is because dental records are needed from victims who hailed from different countries around the world.

At least 58 people are now missing and presumed dead in the Grenfell Tower fire, police have said.

Stuart Cundy, who said the toll was still expected to rise, came as Queen Elizabeth II said the country was trapped in a "sombre national mood".

Mr Cundy said the police investigation into the blaze would look at the building and its refurbishment in 2016 and vowed to prosecute people "if there is evidence". Some said they had never seen a building fire advance so quickly.

Cundy promised an "exhaustive" criminal investigation into the fire that would also look at a major refurbishment of the building completed past year.

'If I identify.an issue that is a risk to public safety, we will be sharing that immediately with the relevant authorities, ' he added.

The fire at the 24-story public housing project broke out early Wednesday. We know that there are still bodies of those who died inside the building and we want to return those people to their families as soon as we possibly can.

London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton told BBC Radio 4's Today programme she could understand the "absolute frustration and misery" of people concerned about loved ones who had not yet been identified, but that it was critical to go through the process properly.

The 91-year-old monarch said that Britain remains "resolute in the face of adversity" after the horrendous fire and recent extremist attacks in London and Manchester.

"You've got to constantly ask 'is this material we're putting on the outside of this building the right material?'"

The latest figures from NHS England show that 17 patients are now being treated in four London hospitals.

"The tragedy at Grenfell Tower has left a number of local people in need of urgent assistance", a spokesman for the three royals at Kensington Palace said.

London police on Sunday released images taken within the tower, saying conditions inside verged on the "indescribable".

Her political future - already in doubt after her Conservative Party lost its governing majority in early elections - has been further questioned because of her response to the fire, and observers have even referred to it as her Hurricane Katrina moment.
