Strong thunderstorms possible Monday afternoon

Rainfall totals expected Monday

A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect until for most of the county until 2:45 p.m. with the possibility of winds up to 70 miles per hour and quarter-sized hail, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Lincoln has extended a flood warning for northern McLean County until noon Sunday.

Heavy rain could lead to flash flooding, the weather service said, but severe winds will provide the main threat to the region.

In addition to the flash flooding, the weather service warns that the scattered strong to severe thunderstorms likely to occur across the Northeast today will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts.

A NWS flash flood watch issued Monday covered most of MA and northern CT.

The entirety of Central and Western Massachusetts is under a severe weather watch that included potential tornadoes, the National Weather Service said Monday. Between that and the rain, our temperatures will be about 10° cooler than the weekend with highs in the mid to upper 70s Monday afternoon.

The Storm Prediction Center is now anticipating a slight to enhanced risk of scattered nasty thunderstorms as depicted here in this chart.

Storms will begin in the mountains around 12 p.m. then will move to parts of southern ME around 2 p.m. Localized amounts of up to 5 inches are possible, too. Most nearby regions will likely see between two and three inches of rain accumulation through tonight. The weather conditions could down trees and power lines. The forecast for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday calls for partly to mostly sunny skies and temps climbing into the low to mid 80s.
