State opening of UK Parliament on Jun 21

The event had to be delayed as Theresa May didn't gain a majority in the general election, forcing the Conservatives into talks with the Democratic Unionist Party, so that they can form a viable government.

The source confirmed there was no need for a deal on a so-called "confidence and supply" arrangement to be sealed in order to press ahead with the Speech, and said Mrs May wanted the Government to "get on with its business".

Negotiations will continue over the weekend with a view to securing a DUP-Tory agreement ahead of the Queen's speech.

But Tories were unwilling to say what meetings are expected over the coming days. In reality, the Government is here simply because the DUP allow it to be so.

However, the source added that a full deal on the government's programme wasn't required before the opening of Parliament, adding that there would be "steady dialogue" with the DUP. These provisions will make a significant contribution to the public finances, and the government will legislate for the remaining provisions at the earliest opportunity, at the start of the new Parliament'.

The details of the speech will be debated for a number of days in the House of Commons before it is voted on.

Why has the 2018 Queen's Speech been cancelled?

Andrea Leadsom, the Leader of the Commons, confirmed the Great Repeal Bill, which aims to transpose existing European Union laws onto the United Kingdom statute book, will form part of Wednesday's Queen's Speech.

This is only the second time the Queen's Speech has been scrapped since 1949.

The last time a two-year parliament was announced was in 2010, at the formation of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition.

It is suggested not having another Queen's Speech cuts the risk of a career-ending Commons defeat with the Tories' slim majority with DUP support.

"There's a lot of legislation to be gone through, we're leaving the European Union at the end of March 2019, so having a two-year period in which to bring together parliament and government, to really make progress on legislation that is essential to make a real success of Brexit".

It is reported the Prime Minister hopes to get a clear run to 2019, and bide enough time to complete Brexit and find a successor.
