Seattle PD: Officers shoot, kill knife-wielding woman

Seattle police are investigating an officer-involved shooting near Magnuson Park in the Sand Point neighborhood

A pregnant Black woman who had called the police to report an attempted burglary in her home was shot and killed by the cops that arrived on the scene Sunday morning in Seattle, Washington.

Following a recent arrest, her family says Lyles found out she was pregnant.

In the choppy audio, the unidentified officers discussed previous visits to Lyles' residence, before greeting her and asking to come into the apartment.

"There's no reason for her to be shot in front of her babies", Williams yelled to reporters outside of the Brettler Family Place apartments where the shooting occurred. Police say the children were not injured. Florida Carroll holds her grandson Quayvis Carroll as they visit a memorial for a woman set up outside an apartment building at Magnuson Park in Seattle on Sunday, June 18, 2017. They are questioning the decision to shoot the young mother since she was a diminutive woman who called the police for help. "They could have pushed her aside like this", swiping the air with her palm. "She had mental health issues that nobody is trying to address".

"Why couldn't they have Tased her?", said Ms Williams to the newspaper, questioning why police did not subdue her sister in a non-fatal manner. "Just because of where she lived and the mental things she's going through, doesn't mean you get to take her life", Isabell said.

In an audio recording released by authorities on Monday, the officers can be heard speaking with Lyles and shouting "Hey, get back!"

The officers who shot her are on paid leave, following standard police procedure. She was arrested on June 5 on charges of harassment, obstruction of a public official and harassment of a law enforcement officer. Following the DOJ's discovery of biased policing and a number of cases involving excessive force by police officers, the SPD was placed under a federal consent decree-a provision that allows the federal government to sue police agencies that show patterns of excessive force or civil rights violations.

"Both officers had to fire their service weapons, striking the individual", Detective Mark Jamieson said. An investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the deadly use of force against Lyles.

The dead woman was identified as 30-year-old Charleena Lyles by family members - who said she had four children and was expecting a fifth. This will be fully investigated. She says an Xbox was stolen and then, the situation escalates quickly.

As part of reforms within the Seattle Police Department, officers must undergo more de-escalation and crisis intervention training.
