Rosenstein Says He Wouldn't Fire Special Counsel Without Good Cause

As Mr Mueller builds his legal team, Mr Trump's allies have begun raising questions about the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's impartiality, suggesting he can not be trusted to lead the probe.

Many conservative legal experts and Trump allies - including Ruddy - are warning Trump strongly against removing Mueller, saying it would backfire spectacularly and lead to charges of obstruction. Senate Democrats have raised questions about whether the men met at an April 2016 foreign policy event at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington.

The revelation came after Ruddy was at the White House on Monday for a meeting with Chief Strategist Steve Bannon.

The White House said that Ruddy speaks only for himself and not the president.

Should Trump want to go around the department, the president would need to repeal the regulations enacted in 1999 that protect the special counsel from being summarily fired.

Graham: Is giving political donations a reason to disqualify somebody for serving in the special counsel's office.

"I think he's weighing that option", said Ruddy. "Senator, I'm not going to follow any order unless I believe those are lawful and appropriate orders", Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said at a Senate hearing on Tuesday.

Mueller, who was appointed as special counsel to oversee the FBI's Russian Federation investigation last month, was roundly praised by Democrats and Republicans as the right person for the job.

They say Trump did not collude with Russian Federation and see the investigation as a politically motivated sham that handicaps Trump's ability to execute his agenda, according to one person who advises the White House on how to handle the probe.

In 1973, amid the Watergate scandal, President Richard Nixon ordered Attorney General Elliot Richardson to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox.

Deputy Attorney General Rob Rosenstein was praised for the Mueller appointment. Cox was eventually fired by Solicitor General Robert Bork. A top Justice department official also said there was no "special plan" to fire Mueller but the caveats he put into the issue generated speculation as to whether the White House is indeed considering such an idea. If Rosenstein declined, the task would then fall to acting solicitor general Jeffrey Wall. "I think the way the investigation is shaping up, he's out to get the president". Let's not forget what this is originally all about.

Speaking earlier, House Speaker Paul Ryan said politicians should allow the special counsel to do his work.

Rosenstein handed the reigns of the investigation over to Mueller last month not long after Trump abruptly fired FBI director James Comey, cutting short his 10-year term.

"We also were aware of facts that I can't discuss in an open setting that would make his continued engagement in a Russia-related investigation problematic", Comey said.

The speaker listed the policy issues that congressional Republicans were focused on like a bill on the House floor this week to improve accountability for veterans' health care, telling reporters, "We are focused on solving people's problems".

"I'm not a flak for the White House".

The White House has said Donald Trump "has no intention" of sacking the special counsel investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
