Rosenstein: I Wouldn't Fire Mueller From Russia Probe Without 'Good Cause'

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was asked about news reports suggesting Trump was mulling letting Mueller go, but said he has not seen evidence he has cause to fire Mueller.

When West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin asked Rosenstein if Mueller could be "terminated without cause", Rosenstein said "yes". "I do believe he has a legal right to do it and I do think it was considered as an option, as the president's own attorney said". "If there were not good cause, it would not matter to me what anybody said", he said.

In the same interview, Ruddy said that the president was considering terminating Mueller as special counsel.

The former House speaker Newt Gingrich, an informal Trump adviser, tweeted on Monday: "Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair". Sessions recused himself from investigations related to the Trump campaign in February, a move that also provoked Trump's ire. Rosenstein wrote a memo to Sessions on Comey, which was then used by the administration to justify firing the director for his handling of the Hillary Clinton email case previous year.

This immediately led to the "Saturday Night Massacre" with the resignations of the Attorney General Elliot Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus on October 20, 1973.

"I think we should let Bob Mueller do his work and get to the bottom of it, and get to the bottom of it quickly so that he can be vindicated, get to these things". He later noted that it was up to Mueller to determine whether the issue might be part of his investigation, and he thought Mueller "ought to review that".

Mr Sessions vigorously denied having an undisclosed meeting with Russia's ambassador to the US.

He also emphasized that the DOJ will "faithfully follow the regulation" and Mueller will have the "full degree of independence he needs to conduct that investigation appropriately". Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii. That hearing will be public and is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.

Legally-speaking, experts say that that job belongs to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, though Trump could order Rosenstein to fire Mueller.

Ruddy was at the White House on Monday (Tuesday NZT) to meet with White House aides, but did not speak with the president, Press Secretary Sean Spicer said.

It's hard to say how much credibility should be attached to Christopher Ruddy's remark on PBS and later on CNN.

Criticism of Mueller, who is generally well regarded across both parties, has been building in conservative media for days.

Before Comey testified, Trump suggested there might be a White House recording of their private dinner, which Comey said he hopes there is. Coulter suggested that because Comey had testified that Trump hadn't been personally under investigation while he was FBI director, the objective of Mueller's commission "is now over".

The removal, should it happen, would surely be just as controversial - if not even more so - than Trump's decision to fire Comey. "I think it's pretty clear by what one of his lawyers said on television recently".

Elliott Hamilton, writing for The Daily Wire on June 12, said that "given all of this information, it would obligate Mueller to recuse himself from issues surrounding his friend and former colleague".

It was unclear over the weekend if the hearing would be open or closed, but late Monday morning, the committee's chair and vice-chair, Sen.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said it would be "extraordinarily unwise".

A number of key Republicans have publicly advised Trump to keep Mueller.
