Proposed ballot measure would set age limits on smartphone sales

On the Parents Against Underage Smartphones website, the group likens the proposal to age limits on tobacco and porn. He saw how his two youngest sons behaved after they got their first devices: Where they were once energetic and outgoing, Farnum says they both became quiet and reclusive.

If passed, retailers would be required to verbally inquire about the age of the user, document and file reports to to the Department of Revenue. While the technology itself wasn't shown to be damaging, not addressing the child's problems risks inflicting developmental damage on them.

The founder of the group, Dr. Timothy Farnum, a board certified anesthesiologist, said earlier this month that once children get a smartphone, they change.

When Farnum would try to take away their phones, it would trigger aggressive temper tantrums.

But the father of five is not convinced these devices are beneficial for children, a conclusion he came to after his two youngest sons, ages 11 and 13, got smartphones a year ago. For that to happen, Farnum and officials would have to obtain 300,000 voter signatures to the proposal.

The proposal would require retailers to submit reports to the state government verifying that they had inquired about who each sold smartphone was meant to be used by, and fine those that repeatedly sell phones to be used by young children and preteens.

Stores violating the measure would be subjected to fines of $500 to $20,000.

"Frankly, I think it should remain a family matter, ". John Kefalas told the Coloradoan while he gets where Farnum is coming from, he believes a new law simply makes the state responsible for parenting.

"We have age restrictions on all those things because they're harmful to kids", Farnum told The Washington Post when comparing smartphone access to equivalents like smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol.

'This is no different, in my opinion'.

Assuming PAUS can get the necessary 100,000 signatures to proceed, this proposal will appear on the ballot late next year. "I think ultimately, this comes down to parents. making sure their kids are not putting themselves at risk". Parents should co-view media with children to help them understand what they are seeing and apply it to the world around them.

"One, Farnum recalled, even offered a striking admission: "'Hey dad, I really like reading now'".
