Pentagon: US shoots down Syrian aircraft for first time

Russia's defense ministry says it will treat US -led coalition planes in Syria, west of the Euphrates River, as targets after the USA military shot down a Syrian Air Force jet on Sunday.

On June 18, a U.S. F-18 Super Hornet shot down a Syrian SU-22 after the Syrian plane bombed US -backed rebels in Raqqa Province, the Pentagon said.

The statement also said the USA -backed coalition does not seek to fight with Syria, Russia or pro-regime forces, but it will not hesitate to defend coalition or partner forces from any threat.

An SDF official told Reuters the Syrian army had been engaged in skirmishes in recent days with US -backed forces near the town of Maskaneh close to the borders of Raqqa province, much of which is now held by USA -backed groups fighting Islamic State.

When the Syrian plane ignored calls to disengage, a US F/A-18E Super Hornet shot it down, killing the lone pilot.

"The coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria", the USA military statement said, using a common acronym for Islamic State.

The coalition stressed it does not seek hostilities with Syrian, Russian or pro-Assad forces, but "the demonstrated hostile intent and actions of pro-regime forces toward Coalition and partner forces in Syria conducting legitimate counter-ISIS operations will not be tolerated".

According to U.S. Central Command, pro-regime forces drove the rebels out of town.

The U.S. military has shot down a Syrian Air Force fighter jet that bombed local forces aligned with the Americans in the fight against Islamic State militants. The coalition also said that Russian officers had been contacted on a special "de-confliction" hotline in an effort to halt the assault.

The Canadian military has been flying surveillance aircraft and a refuelling plane over Syria as part of its contribution to the US -led anti-ISIL coalition.

This is the fourth time within a month that the U.S. military has targeted the Syrian defence, according to the WaPo report.

Russian Federation has fighter aircraft, air defense weapons and other military assets in Syria in support of President Bashar Assad's government.

The US-led coalition in Syria has shot down a Syrian military jet in Raqqa province.

"The Coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria", its statement said. The regime's forces wounded a significant number of soldiers who retreated from the town.

Despite the calls to stand down and the U.S. presence, the Syrian Su-22 jet dropped an unknown number of munitions on the SDF.

Meanwhile, much of the mainstream media had an adulatory reaction to Trump's decision to bomb a Syrian airbase earlier this year-a response that taught Trump that "bold" military actions create strong political leaders.

Six missiles with a range of between 650 to 700 kilometers (400-435 miles) were fired from western Iran, soaring over Iraqi territory and striking the targets in Deir al-Zor. US-backed forces have encircled the city of Raqqa and captured several districts from ISIL fighters.
