London vehicle hits pedestrians, police say 'number of casualties'

British Prime Minister Theresa May called the attack "terrorist" in nature and condemned it Monday. She said her thoughts were with the injured, their loved ones and emergency officials who responded to the incident.

Others linked the attack to an increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes, particularly since the London Bridge rampage on June 3 that left eight people dead, which was claimed by the Islamic State group. "It appears from eyewitness accounts that the perpetrator was motivated by Islamophobia", he said.

Saeed Hashi described how he fought with the driver, and how he and two others held him to the ground for 10 minutes as they waited for police to arrive.

The attack - the fourth terror assault to jolt Britain in four months - occurred just after midnight outside the Muslim Welfare House, which houses a mosque, on the Seven Sisters Road when some people were helping a man who had collapsed.

"By God's grace, we were able to protect him from harm", he said.

Several people were injured in north London early on Monday after reports that a vehicle rammed into pedestrians, British police said.

However, by 8am United Kingdom time, the Guardian had begun referring to "terror" with the headlines "terror hits north London mosque" then "Finsbury Park terror attack: one dead near north London mosque".

The attack comes during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, when people attend prayers at night.

He said: "This is a very multi-faith community".

"People had to lift the van to pick up people who'd been run over, and then perform CPR on them", Omar said.

Basu confirmed witness accounts that the man found dead at the scene was already receiving first aid when the attack happened, adding it was unclear whether he died as a result of the attack.

"While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the bad attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect", he added.

Yards from the scene of the attack, transit workers at Finsbury Park Tube station offered words of encouragement.

Another witness, who wanted to be identified as Abdulrahman, which is not his real name, told the Press Association: "I managed to get the driver of the van". "I came out. and started walking away when I heard screaming", he said.

For these reasons, London Mayor Sadiq Khan (the city's first Muslim mayor who expressed disgust and fury at the London Bridge terrorists for what he deemed an appropriation of his religion) has declared the mosque-targeting incident as a "horrific terrorist attack". The source, spoke on conditions of anonymity fearing reprisal, added: "When there was the stabbing incident [in London Bridge], do you know how many Muslims women were attacked after that?"

We have had tens of people killed after Manchester and the London murders on the streets of our country.

The Muslim community has appealed for calm, saying decades has been spent creating a peaceful and tolerant environment in Finsbury Park. We're not safe. If I stay here, people could come and attack me with a vehicle.

Muslim Welfare House CEO Toufik Kacimi said the attacker shouted "I did my bit, you deserve it".

After every single Salafi Islamist attack in the west the extreme-right fanatics come crawling out of the woodwork to demand that Muslims in general condemn the attack.

Two weeks earlier, a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert by American pop singer Ariana Grande in Manchester in northern England.

Its former imam, Abu Hamza, was jailed for life in NY on terrorism charges in 2015.

In March, a lone attacker drove his vehicle into people on Westminster Bridge, then fatally stabbed a police officer at the gates of Parliament.
