Lawyer says Trump not under investigation

President Donald Trump and his son Barron Trump walk to Marine One across the South Lawn of the White House in Washington Saturday

President Donald Trump's lawyer said Sunday that the President is not under investigation for possible obstruction of justice - despite Trump seemingly confirming that he was in a tweet earlier in the week.

A source familiar with the Mueller probe said on Thursday that investigators would have to gather a large amount of evidence before an interview with the president would be warranted.

Trump's tweet, however, explicitly says he is under investigation and calls that investigation a "witch hunt".

The Post reported last week that special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, who was appointed to oversee the investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 election, is interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of a widening probe that now includes an examination of whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice.

Sekulow also appeared on "Face the Nation" where he continued to use the argument that Trump is not under investigation because they hadn't received any notice that he was.

Trump repeatedly has criticized the investigation into whether Russian Federation interfered with the 2016 president election and whether anyone on his campaign staff colluded. "I can not read the mind of the special prosecutor", Sekulow said.

"Trump has a compulsion to counterattack and is very pugnacious".

The president has denied that he has any nefarious ties to Russian Federation and has also disputed that he's attempted to block the investigation into his campaign's possible role in Russia's election-related hacking.

Sekulow, chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, said the president was only referring to a news report.

Wallace: You just said that he's being investigated. He said he had only been discussing the constitutional problem posed if the president were being investigated.

"No one has notified us that he is" under investigation, Sekulow said. "He can not in a Twitter statement include all of that in there, but The Washington Post statement came out that morning".

He said, however, that Sekulow's comments could mean the White House was taking the position that no investigation exists until Mueller's team officially confirms it, disregarding any media reports based on anonymous sourcing. "And he's not just being investigated for firing Comey, there's also what he said to Comey when Comey was still the Federal Bureau of Investigation director".

Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, defended Mueller and his team, noting that lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have praised his appointment. He then stated again that Trump was not being investigated. They're essentially engaging in a scorched earth litigation strategy that is beginning with trying to discredit the prosecutor.

The president also tweeted about a poll that gives him a 50% approval rating, adding that it is higher than his predecessor Barack Obama's.

The Senate intelligence committee is in the early stages of its probe and is looking at whether anyone involved in the campaign shared information with the Russians, said Senator Angus King of ME, an independent who caucuses with Democrats. "You just told us that".
