Iran says it has killed mastermind of twin attacks

Members of Iranian forces are seen during an attack on the Iranian parliament in central Tehran Iran

Iranian authorities have arrested seven people it suspects of helping militants involved in this week's attacks in the capital Tehran, a judiciary official said on Saturday.

Iran's intelligence ministry released a communiqué recounting the latest follow-up measures by Iran's security forces after the Wednesday terrorist attack on Tehran, Mehr news agency reports.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the twin attack on Iran's parliament and the tomb of the country's former supreme religious leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomenei.

We grieve and pray for the innocent victims of the terrorist attacks in Iran, and for the Iranian people, who are going through such challenging times.

Earlier, the Iran's Revolutionary Guards blamed Saudi Arabia for Wednesday's deadly terror attacks.

The two simultaneous terrorist attacks targeted the parliament in downtown Tehran and the mausoleum of Imam Khomeini in the south of the metropolis. At least two of them blew themselves up with suicide vests, Iranian media reported.

Three assailants entered the Majlis compound aiming to reach the parliament floor, but security personnel denied them entry and terrorists instead walked into an office building next to Majlis and started shooting blindly that left dozens of casualties.

Khamenei had initially played down the attacks, describing them as "firecrackers" that "will not have the slightest effect on the will of the people".

Iran's intelligence minister Mahmoud Alavi said security forces had killed the commander of the operation, which saw five men dressed as women open fire on visitors to the Majlis-e Shoura and the mausoleum.

The group and other extremists consider Shias to be apostates, and the video accuses Iranians of persecuting Sunnis over the centuries. The Interior Ministry in a statement increased the number of wounded to 52, up from 40.

Newly re-elected President Hassan Rouhani has said the attacks would make Iran more united.

Iran's Intelligence Ministry said on Thursday five of the attackers were Iranian nationals recruited by Islamic State who had fought in the militants' main strongholds in Syria and Iraq. Finally White House officials published a statement condemning the attacks on its website, but in the last sentence seemed to say that Iran had itself to blame.
