Egypt condemns London mosque attack

A van plowed into a group of Muslim worshipers after prayers at a pair of north London mosques early Monday, leaving one person dead and injuring 10 others in what is being called a "terrorist attack".

The driver of the van, a 48-year-old man, was found at the scene and detained by the public until police arrested him.

But her statement in the wake of the Finsbury Park attack appears to mark a significant reset of that "one-eyed" approach.

"I would like to ... thank our Imam, Mohammed Mahmoud, whose bravery and courage helped calm the immediate situation after the incident and prevented further injuries and potential loss of life", said Toufik Kacimi, the chief executive of the Muslim Welfare House.

"He tried to run away but we brought him down".

Monday's attack hit a community already feeling targeted from the fallout from three previous attacks in as many months, all blamed on Islamic extremists.

"Terrorism is terrorism. While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the bad attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect", he said, adding that the city was grieving and still recovering from the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy in west London.

Monday morning the Muslim Welfare House headlined its website with this message: "All of us at Muslim Welfare House sends our thoughts and prayers to the victims and those injured in the major incident at Finsbury Park".

"Reassurance they are free to practise their faith, they are free to walk about the streets, and people must be able to do that", he said.

One witness, who went by the name Abdul, told The Independent: "People gather on that part of the street during Ramadan to chat and socialize so it was premeditated". "In the last 90 days or so, the country, and specifically London, is dealing with a high demand for counter-terror officers".

Prime Minister Theresa May described it as a "terrible incident", the BBC reported.

He added: "I receive briefings from the counter terror team and the good news is the counter terrorism team have been recognizing for a while now there are terrorists motivated by other means other than perverse Islamist motivation".

"We will not allow these terrorists to succeed".

A new board of trustees and management took over in February 2005, a year after Abu Hamza was arrested by British police, since when attendance has greatly increased among worshippers from various communities, according to the mosque's website.

The incident early Monday follows two recent terrorist attacks in London in which vehicles have been used as weapons, both on bridges over the Thames River. He has been taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Witness Hussain Ali, 28, told the Press Association that "the leader of the mosque said "You do not touch him".

"Diverse, welcoming, vibrant, compassionate, confident and determined never to give in to hate". In addition to the attackers, seven people are killed and dozens of others wounded.

"There has been an outpouring of sympathy for all the recent terror attacks but hardly a whisper on this attack", he said.

Eight people were killed and more than 40 injured in the June 3 attack before the men were shot to death by authorities.

Police arrested the man soon after.
