They asked the judge to repeat two different parts of Cosby's statements to authorities, asked the court to define the phrase "without her knowledge" in one of the charges, and asked to hear repeat testimony from the Canadian detective who interviewed Constand. It was read to them by the judge. The jury went home around 9:30 p.m. ET Monday without reaching a verdict.
Actor and comedian Bill Cosby (L) leaves with his spokesman Andrew Wyatt after a break in the deliberations in his sexual assault trial at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania, US June 12, 2017.
McMonagle maintained that the incident was one of three consensual sexual encounters between Cosby and Constand.
Constand, now 44, was the prosecution's star witness in the week-long trial in the Philadelphia suburb of Norristown, testifying that Cosby gave her pills that left her unable to respond when he sexually assaulted her.
"To allege that this is just some relations that is going to another level just doesn't make sense", Steele said.
Dozens of women have made similar accusations against Cosby, 79, although only Constand has accused him of a crime that allegedly took place recently enough to allow for prosecution.
He is charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault, each one punishable by up to 10 years behind bars.
"Ladies and gentlemen, he has told you what he has done", District Attorney Kevin Steele said in his closing argument, according to Reuters.
McMonagle, in his closing argument, tried to sow doubt about Constand's story.
"McMonagle focused on Constand's shifting story, pointing out that she changed her estimate of when the alleged assault occurred several times in speaking with police in 2005". She sat in the front row, across the aisle from Constand. They said the charges were filed too late. "Why are we running from the truth of this case - this relationship?" Among those listening was Cosby's 73-year-old wife of half a century and business manager, Camille, who came to the courtroom for the first time on Monday.
Cosby was painted as a predator and callous manipulator by the prosecution, while the defence portrayed him as a lover and kindly mentor.
She said Cosby gave her three pills and wine before touching her breasts, putting his fingers in her vagina and putting her hand on his erect penis after she sought his advice about moving to Canada and switching careers. He later said he had given her Benadryl. Cosby testified over a decade ago as part of that lawsuit, eventually settling with her for an undisclosed sum.
Cosby's testimony in her civil case shows just how hard a witness he would have been to control.
"This is not a civil case about money, money, money". "We're talking about all the man's tomorrows". "He's an actor and he's a very good actor", Duquesne University School of Law professor Wes Oliver said ahead of Monday's court session.
"But under the defendant's own words, you must convict".
Mr Steele told the jury that Mr Cosby took away Ms Constand's ability to consent with the pills, that their later contacts were irrelevant, and that jurors should ignore what he said were myths about how sexual assault victims are supposed to behave.
"There are some things in this case that should be fuzzy. Why? And then you drugged her and you did what you wanted". "She spent a lot more time trying to forget what happened than trying to remember that night".
In those depositions, Cosby admitted to stockpiling quaaludes for the express goal of giving them to young women he wanted to have sexual contact with. Constand - then an athletic, 6-foot-tall college basketball staffer - said they made her dazed and groggy, and unable to say no or fight back when Cosby went inside her trousers. Legal experts and courtroom observers generally dismissed that suggestion as a bluff, perhaps created to throw prosecutors - who ended with a lot of momentum - off balance.
Nonetheless, the comedian whose storytelling artistry fueled a $400 million fortune went quiet Monday when he had the chance to take the stand.
Detective Richard Schaffer told the jury that Constand had paid Cosby a visit at an out-of-state casino on the night of the alleged assault. Cosby has said he is legally blind because of glaucoma.
