Attorneys General sue Trump over hotel payments

The lawsuits contend that Mr. Trump violates the "emoluments" clause by receiving economic benefits from owning a company that rents rooms and spaces to foreign governments in NY and the District of Columbia.

As if he didn't have enough on his hands, President Donald Trump has new antagonists on another front, this one contending that he is violating the emoluments clause of the Constitution through his continued ownership of the Trump organization.

The domestic Emoluments Clause says presidents will receive payment for their time in the White House and may not receive payment or "any other emolument" from a U.S. state or a foreign government during this period. "This case is, at its core, about the right of Marylanders, residents of the District of Columbia and all Americans to have honest government", Frosh said, adding they need to see Trump's financial records to know the "extent of Trump's constitutional violations".

"We have economic interests that are impacted, but the most salient factor is that when the president is subject to foreign influence, we have to be concerned about whether the actions he's taking - both at home and overseas - are the result of payments that he is receiving at the Trump Hotel, payments that he is receiving at Mar-a-Lago, payments that he is receiving at Trump Tower, payments that he is receiving in all of his other far-flung enterprises, and he brags about it", Frosh said.

Frosh of Maryland and Karl A. Racine of Washington, DC, filed the lawsuit in US District Court in Maryland.

The lawsuit says despite billionaire Trump having placed his extensive business holdings in a trust after he was elected president, he still owns the properties and is well-aware of the money they are earning him.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer noted that response at a White House briefing Monday. Since Trump's inauguration [VIDEO], Saudi Arabia has also booked hotel rooms several times. This was the first claim of similar content of state structures against President #Donald Trump, the newspaper concluded.

According to the publication, if a federal judge accepts the claim, the prosecutors would require disclosing Trump's tax return for determining the scale of the foreign transactions of his business.

Trump's unique status as both president and the financial beneficiary of his global business empire raised questions about the little-known emoluments clause of the Constitution even before he took office.

These two Democratic attorney generals are like leaders who take the first step against Trump's policies, successfully blocking executive orders constraining travel from some Muslim-majority countries. Their lawsuit says Trump is violating the Constitution by accepting profits from foreign governments for the use of his hotels, resorts and other properties.

The Justice Department said Friday that those plaintiffs did not suffer in any way and had no standing to sue, and that it is unconstitutional to sue the president in his official capacity.

"Were plaintiffs" interpretation correct, presidents from the very beginning of the republic, including George Washington, would have received prohibited "emoluments, '" the department said.

Stay on topic - This helps keep the thread focused on the discussion at hand.
