'Wonder Woman' conquers milestone with $100.5 million debut

Actress Gal Gadot who plays the title role in

Patty Jenkins holds the title for the biggest domestic debut for a female director after "Wonder Woman" smashed box office estimates over the weekend.

The new film, starring Gal Gadot, fell slightly short of surpassing Fifty Shades' global opening total, which was £187 million, taking £5.82 million in the UK.

Wonder Woman's stellar opening weekend success 'saves the day, at least for now, for the summer box office, according to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore.

Reports also state that the film has surpassed all other Marvel Universe films with the exception of The Avengers. The movie also received an "A" rating from CinemaScore, which polls North American audience members throughout a film's opening weekend to assign a comprehensive crowd-sourced grade to every theatrical release. The movie, which chronicles the origin of mythical Amazonian warrior Diana, Princess of Themyscira, is officially the first successful superhero movie with a female lead.

Gadot made her debut as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice a year ago.

Some still had issues with "Wonder Woman". "You want to do a movie like this because you believe in it", she said. "They're about women as well", says Jeff Goldstein, distribution chief for Warner Bros.

Now that she conquered the box office, expect more women power until the studios kill that off with too much product. It certainly had that feel opening weekend, where droves of moviegoers came wearing "We are all Diana" T-shirts, young girls flocked in Wonder Woman outfits and even movie stars were blowing kisses at the movie and calling it a "game changer".

Wonder Woman is now holding a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it certifiably "Fresh" with an A CinemaScore.

In the world of male Superheroes Wonder Woman is setting the bars high for women-oriented action flicks with nail-biting action, gravity-defying stunts, and a good storyline.

With a budget of $150 million, the newest DC movie was the most expensive to ever be directed by a woman. "It might be a $10 million movie or it might be $200 million movie", she explained.
