US Open leaderboard 2017

Tricky conditions as players begin third round of US Open

The wind at Erin Hills is finally expected to pick up for Sunday's final round, which could put a halt to all the record-setting scoring that's made the U.S. Open leaderboard look more like one at a regular PGA Tour stop.

Who will survive the toughest test of the...

In the 116 previous U.S. Opens, only six players had ever reached 10-under par or better, never in the same tournament. "I've pictured winning the US Open a lot of times before".

Thomas bogeyed three of his first five holes to drop back to 8 under. He failed to get up-and-down from behind the 17th green, and then he three-putted from 40 feet on the final hole to finish at 8-under 272. It looks like he could swing the club with a plate on top of his head that would not fall off. Wish I could have done that. "I will do my best", he said.

Speaking after a nervy ending to his round which ended with a vital bogey putt, Fleetwood added: "It was uncharted territory for me, leading a major but from the minute I teed off I felt comfortable in my swing".

"When you look at the USGA championships, by and large just about any way you look at, they're the most important championships not only in the USA but in the world", Mike Davis, USGA executive director/CEO, said earlier this year.

The soft, forgiving conditions created opportunity for major movement up the leaderboard for those players willing to take it.

Kite says "I don't anticipate this being a bloodletting".

It's Sunday at the U.S. Open and the top six golfers are separated by three strokes.

"That means I'm a part of history", Thomas told reporters. He was 10 under, only two shots behind.

He rolled in an 18-foot birdie putt on No. 5 from the edge of the green that broke so severely that he stood with his toes facing the hole and rapped the ball toward his left foot. We didn't hit it down the slope.

Paul Casey carded a triple bogey for the second day running but unlike on day two, was unable to bounce back with five birdies in succession.

American Justin Thomas equalled the lowest score in major championship history yesterday - shooting nine-under. "I was just happy that I was the one that was able to take advantage of it today".

But the work is not done. He will now be focusing on trying to control his nerves as he heads into the business end of what has been a remarkable second major of 2017 thus far.

Fowler agreed that the wide open leaderboard - none of the top 16 players have won a major - made it anyone's title to win.

"Someone has a very good chance of ending up with their first major tomorrow", Fowler said. This was the goal going into the week to put ourselves in position to be in contention on Sunday.
