UK Labour Leader Corbyn: 'I Can Still Be Prime Minister'

What Is a Hung Parliament? UK Elections Exit Polls Predicts May to Lose Majority, so What Happens Next?

But few believe she can hang on for more than a few months.

Leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn was victorious in a close race against May, giving the left-leaning party the majority in the British Parliament.

Following the election, May faced backlash over the failure of the Conservative party, with a number of politicians - including Corbyn - suggesting that she has to resign.

But the prime minister insisted that she could carry on.

The Queen would not expect to become involved in any negotiations, but the Palace would be kept informed via representatives of the political parties or the Cabinet Secretary. Further announcements were expected on Saturday.

The early election was meant to strengthen the British Conservative Party's hand in the lead-up to Brexit negotiations, but it has backfired spectacularly. However, the small regional party would not form part of a coalition government.

She will clearly be looking to get as much out of the prime minister as possible in exchange for support.

Nevertheless, after this poor showing, Conservatives are unlikely to want May to be their figurehead during the next election, so it seems fairly likely she'll be pushed out at some point - whether that means sooner or later is yet to be seen.

On Twitter, Siegfried Muresan, spokesman for the European Parliament's largest grouping, the European People's Party, said, "EU did not want #Brexit, but has been prepared to negotiate it since past year".

Prior to June 8, the leader of the Scottish National Party, Nicola Sturgeon was pushing hard for a second referendum, after losing the 2014 independence vote.

With 650 MPs in Parliament, 326 seats are needed for an absolute majority in the House of Commons.

May said Brexit talks would begin on June 19 as scheduled, the same day the British parliament is due to reconvene.

If there is any consolation for May and the Conservatives, it is that following Thursday's election, Scotland is not leaving the United Kingdom anytime soon.

German politician and European Union executive member Guenther Oettinger said, however, that a weak British leader increased the risk negotiations would turn out badly. Her plans for Brexit would go forward.

There was little sympathy for May from some Europeans. All of this will certainly make Brexit negotiations more complex. There were also shock results in Scotland.

But just hours later, DUP leader Arlene Foster was more reserved in her enthusiasm.

"We must in my view seek to deliver an open Brexit, not a closed one, which puts our countrys economic growth first", Davidson said.

In a WhatsApp message to Conservative lawmakers, Johnson said: "Folks we need to calm down and get behind the prime minister".

Former Treasury chief George Osborne - who was sacked by May a year ago - called May a "dead woman walking", and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he was ready to contest another election at any time.

May's majority in parliament until the snap election was only held by 17 seats, but now she is at a considerable disadvantage.

May called the election called in a bid to strengthen her mandate ahead of European Union exit talks.

Her campaign unravelled after a policy U-turn on care for the elderly, while Corbyn's old-school socialist platform and more impassioned campaigning style won wider support than anyone had foreseen, notably from young voters, say analysts. Since then, a combination of poor campaigning, increased security concerns after three terror attacks, and rising popularity for Labour caused her plan to backfire. "That's not a matter for me", she said.
