Cars 3 Races Past Wonder Woman at the Box Office

Disney and Pixar's "Cars 3" dominated North American box office with an estimated 53.5 million US dollars during its debut weekend, racing past "Wonder Woman" to the first place. Almost $13 million from 2,471 locations on Friday will put "Eyez" at around $31 million by end of day Sunday, beating out "Wonder Woman's" $11 million Friday estimate.

However, Pixar doesn't seem anxious about the film's performance, with Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis telling Variety that Cars is still "a very important franchise for the company".

In its third weekend, Wonder Woman held strong with $40.8 million (£31.8 million), bringing its domestic total to $274.6 million (£214.3 million).

Lionsgate's "All Eyez On Me" opened in third place with an estimated 27.05 million USA dollars. The newest installment had been forecast to earn $56 million in its opening weekend, according to BoxOfficePro.com.

Receiving fairly positive critical reception with a 65 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, "Cars 3" also continues Pixar's CinemaScore streak with an A. Aside from the A- scored by "Cars 2", every Pixar film has received an A or A+ from CS polls.

Cars 3 sees the return of Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) as the red race auto contends with growing old after getting in an accident while racing against his new rival Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer). The film came in ahead expectations with $27.1 million from 2,471 theaters.

Despite the drop to second place, viewers don't have to worry about Wonder Woman. Demetrius Shipp Jr. plays the mythologised rapper. 47 Meters Down placed fifth with an estimated $11.5 million, while Rough Night had a rough seventh place opening, earning $8.1 million. Sony's R-rated bachelorette party gone wrong pic earned only $8.1 million against a $20 million budget. Lucia Aniello directed the film. "Though "47 Meters" has been met with a tepid reception - 55 percent RT score and a C on CinemaScore - it's an opening above the $6 million target trackers set for it before the weekend".
