Trump has 'no intention' of firing special counsel Mueller

The sound of sharpening knives echoed everwhere Monday.

While the White House has denied any intention to fire Mueller, close associates of Trump, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, are increasingly criticizing the Russian Federation probe as too "political".

He also said that he believed it would be "a very significant mistake" for Trump to fire Mueller, but emphasized that he was concerned about what he described as conflicts.

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel", Chris Ruddy told PBS's Judy Woodruff on "PBS NewsHour".

Others sounded more enthusiastic about dropping the axe. "Look who he is hiring". Check (political donation) reports.

Mueller investigation appeared to be reaching a broadening circle of current and former officials. He has always been widely respected by many in Washington from both sides of the aisle, with many lawmakers praising Deputy Attorney General Rob Rosenstein's pick. "The Department of Justice has a long-established policy to neither confirm nor deny such allegations". Two called the friendship with Comey improper, but manageable; two called it serious; one called it a non-issue. In that case, absent other potential crimes that require a special counsel, the scope of the special counsel's investigation should be limited to what Flynn did. Had he been appointed again by Mr. Trump, Congress would likely have to weigh in again. "I know. I wrote the rules".

Ruddy gained fame in the 1990s as a critic of former President Bill Clinton.

Though some in the White House have preached caution, fearing a repeat of the firestorm over Comey's firing, many in Trump's orbit - including his son Donald Trump Jr. and adviser Newt Gingrich - have deemed Mueller biased and worthy of dismissal.

Speculation continued unabated and deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, who appointed the counsel, was asked about it at a Senate hearing on Tuesday morning.

"Director Comey's testimony once again proved that there was no obstruction" of the Russian Federation investigations, Ruddy said, adding the president and his top aides felt that some people in Washington were trying to undermine Trump's agenda by focusing on the investigations. At the same time, after Trump's firing of. He did not notify White House or Attorney General in advance of his move.

Collins' question wasn't the only time the Mueller investigation came up during Rosenstein's hearing on Capitol Hill.

"Americans should be skeptical about anonymous allegations", Rosenstein said.

President Donald Trump acknowledged for the first time Friday that he is under federal investigation as part of the expanding probe into Russia's election meddling. "And I'm not going to speculate on what he will or will not do", Sekulow said.

Such an action, though, would be politically perilous. "The termination of Mueller would amount to an admission of guilt and obstruction of justice".

These experiences have taught Trump that the caterwauling Republicans have no real power to hold him back.

"I have talked to the president recently but we did not talk about the Mueller situation at all", Ruddy said.

But expressions of discontent with Mueller are bubbling up nonetheless.

Still, Trump's allies are looking to sow doubt, pointing to donations some on Mueller's team have made to Democrats.
