Trump acknowledges he is under investigation in Russia probe

U.S. President Donald J. Trump delivers remarks on

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has hired a lawyer known for defending government officials in high-profile investigations to help him with probes into whether there were ties between the election campaign of U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian Federation, his office said on Thursday.

Former independent counsel Ken Starr called the prospect of firing Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller an "insult to the Founding Fathers" in a Washington Post op-ed published Thursday night.

The expansion of the original investigation occurred after the president fired Mueller's successor at the FBI, James Comey. "Witch Hunt", Trump tweeted on Friday morning.

When Comey was deputy attorney general in the Bush administration, he appointed a close friend and former colleague, Patrick Fitzgerald, as special counsel to investigate who leaked the identity of Valerie Plame, a covert Central Intelligence Agency officer.

A member of President Donald Trump's outside legal team says the president is not under investigation, contradicting a recent tweet from Trump.

No explanation for the statement was given, but it came just hours after The Washington Post published a story saying Mueller's inquiry is now looking at the finances and business dealings of Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and a key adviser to the president.

At a ceremony last month to welcome Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand, the Justice Department's third-ranking official, Rosenstein joked awkwardly about being at the center of criticism since taking office, according to people who were in the room. Mueller also has expansive powers to investigate any matters that develop from his initial investigation.

Comey told a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing last week Trump spoke to him privately on several occasions and insinuated he wanted the Flynn investigation dropped. The former Federal Bureau of Investigation director testified last week that the president had asked him to let go of the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into fired national security adviser Michael Flynn.

His time under Bush, Obama and then Trump made him the longest-serving USA attorney in the nation's history when he was confirmed to his current role under Sessions. Cohen has received a subpoena from one of the congressional committees looking into the Russian Federation issue.

Rosenstein has been overseeing the Russian Federation probe since shortly after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., criticized her for her "pro-corporate" work at the time of her confirmation last month, and other Democrats feared it might interfere with her duties on antitrust and civil rights issues at the Justice Department.

"Mueller and Rod Rosenstein?".

"The message the president is sending through his tweets is that he believes the rule of law doesn't apply to him and that anyone who thinks otherwise will be fired", Feinstein said. He said this week he had not found reason to do so — making the statement in the days after Trump's friends raised the possibility that the president himself was thinking of "terminating" Mueller. Rosenstein, who would be responsible for actually dismissing Mueller, told US lawmakers he would fire him only with good cause.
