Spanish bullfighter dies after being gored

Ivan Fandino performs during bullfights at Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas in Madrid Spain

Basque bullfighter Ivan Fandino has reportedly been gored to death after stumbling on his cape in the ring in southwestern France.

It was later revealed that the bull's horn had pierced Fandino's side which left the matador with a punctured a lung.

The bullfighter caught his feet in his cloak while attempting a turn created to distract the specially-bred fighting animal.

A matador has died after being gored in the chest by a bull, becoming the second Spanish bullfighter to die in the bullring in the past year.

The famous matador, husband and father has fought hundreds of bulls during his professional 12-year career.

Fandino had won an earlier fight and cut off the bull's ear, AFP reports.

Around 1,000 bulls a year are killed in this way in France every year. 'We just do not know how it could have happened'.

Fandino is the first bullfighter to die in France since 1921 - but past year matador Victor Barrio was killed in an event in Spain that was being aired live on TV.

The royals paid homage on their official Twitter feed to "a great bullfighting figure" while Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy lamented the "sad news", as did his culture minister.

Spanish matador Ivan Fandino leans his face on the barrier during a bullfight at the Maestranza bullring in the Andalusian capital of Seville, southern Spain April 26, 2015. Ivan Fandino was due to enter the ring at the upcoming eighteenth San Isidro Fair in Madrid.

A renowned Spanish bullfighter has died after he tripped on his cloak and was fatally gored in a ring in France.

Commenting on Fandino's death, the Humane Society International said it was a "tragedy".
