Scalise upgraded from 'critical' to 'serious' condition

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding, Sava said.

The suspect in the shooting at the congressional baseball practice earlier this week had a list including the names of some members of Congress on him, CBS News has confirmed. This person was not authorized to speak publicly about the case and spoke on condition of anonymity. "The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time", it added.

One source told CBS News the note is not considered an "assassination list", but it is clear Hodgkinson had a group of people he was focused on recently.

In a statement released on behalf of the House majority whip's family, MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Scalise is now in serious condition. According to The Daily Caller, who first reported on the list, names included Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL), Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) and Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ).

He suffered massive blood loss and was at "imminent risk of death" upon arriving at the hospital Wednesday.

The gunman, 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, was shot and killed by responding officers.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

Scalise "continues to show signs of improvement", the hospital said Saturday.

Scalise, Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika, congressional aide Zach Barth and US Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner were shot during an attack on the Republican congressional baseball team as it practiced Wednesday morning.

"He remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours. After discharge he will need a period of healing and rehabilitation".
