Representative Scalise's condition upgraded to 'serious' after shooting

The senior Republican suffered extensive injuries and was in critical condition on Wednesday night.

Louisiana member Mr Scalise, 51, was one of five people shot when gunman James Hodgkinson opened fire as the Republican team practised for a charity game against Democrats in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday. The congressman underwent another surgery Saturday, and the hospital says he is more responsive and speaking with family. He has required surgery several times since the shooting.

The person told the Associated Press on Saturday that investigators weren't sure of the significance of the names and didn't know whether it was a list of people he was targeting.

Scalise, the third-ranking GOP leader in the House, "continues to show signs of improvement", said the statement from MedStar Washington Hospital Center, which it released on behalf of Scalise's family. The bullet that struck Scalise "travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding", his doctors said.

Lobbyist Matt Mika, who was also shot multiple times and critically wounded, has undergone additional surgery and doctors expect a full recovery, his family said Saturday.

The president said that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified". He added that Scalise would be in the hospital "for some time" and would need "a period of healing and rehabilitation" after being discharged. Two Capitol Police officers were wounded in the attack; they were credited with averting a massacre.

Two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House Republican aide Zack Barth, were also injured in the shooting. The shooter was an IL man, James T. Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against President Trump and Republicans over social media. Griner remains hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.

Mr Mika's family said he was still in intensive care but was able to communicate through notes - and had signed the game ball from Friday's congressional baseball game.

U.S. Representative Steve Scalise, the No. 3 Republican in the House of Representatives, showed further improvement days after being shot by a man who opened fire on lawmakers at a baseball practice earlier in the week, his lead surgeon said in a statement on Saturday.
