Protest against Sharia Law held in Richardson

NBC 4 New York

The rally began around 10 am and saw heated moments between Anti-Sharia law proponents and Anti-Trump counter protesters.

Police kept the two contingents separated from each other during the sanctioned events but a large fight broke out afterward.

Of course, when the two side stand off like opposing armies, the hostile outcome is not all that surprising.

Protesters and counter-protesters chanted back and forth to one another outside the Capitol, with the Minnesota State Patrol standing in between the groups. Pro-Trump people told me that this idea of Sharia is sort of a shorthand, a symbol of where they think the country might go if more Muslim refugees and immigrants arrive.

"The participants chanted slogans, accusing" anti-Sharia" marchers of racism and Islamophobia. In Atlanta, Georgia, a small group of demonstrators gathered in Piedmont Park to protest against the Sharia.

"All across this country today, people came out and shut the racists down", said John Beacham of Answer Chicago.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the country's largest Muslim advocacy group, urged Americans to participate in one of several local educational events being organised in "a peaceful challenge to Saturday's hate rallies".

A similar scene played out in a park near a NY courthouse, where counter-protesters sounded air-horns and banged pots and pans in an effort to silence an ACT rally.

MARTIN: You know, that's interesting because, you know, there are groups that keep track of groups like Act for America, groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center which tracks hate crimes and hate groups, and they suggest that Act for America is in fact an anti-Muslim group.

Organizers for ACT for America are trying to take a stand against Sharia, which form part of the Islamic tradition, and are calling it incompatible with the Constitution and American values.

"We support our Muslim neighbors, we believe they a right to be here and that they can they should be able to live here", said Ken Dinder; a supporter of Islamic law.

Harris Zafar, director of outreach for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Portland, published an op-ed in the Huffington Post Friday arguing the movement is based on a gross misinterpretation of Sharia law.

Marches against Islamic law have drawn larger counter-rallies in other USA cities. The rallies occurred near a building developed by President Donald Trump.

MANN: Well, this was a group called Act for America.

A representative for ACT for America could not be reached for comment. Around 100 people got together inside the Capitol rotunda to hear to speeches about how Islamic law is a threat to democracy. A Briton who moved to the United States, he said he had made a decision to go after recent attacks in his home country.
