Palestinians dispute IS claim for deadly attack on Israel

Three Palestinians armed with an automatic weapon and knives attacked Israeli officers on duty near Jerusalem's Old City in twin attacks at two locations on Friday evening, critically wounding one before they were shot and killed.

The Islamic State initially claimed responsibility for the attack, the first time it has claimed responsibility for a Palestinian terror attack in Israel.

However, the Hamas and People's Front for the Liberation of Palestine militant groups quickly retorted that the three attackers who were killed were their members and accused IS of trying to undermine their efforts. However there have been a string of recent attacks near the Old City in east Jerusalem.

He lambasted the outlet on Twitter for failing to describe how the Palestinian assailants were killed as they attacked civilians and Israeli soldiers.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged the Palestinian Authority to halt payments to the families of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces.

Israeli officials, in turn, denied that Hamas was responsible.

Terror group ISIS claimed responsibility of the attack, reaffirming that the attack was premeditated and not improvised.

Two Palestinians opened fire at and tried to stab a group of Israeli police officers, and simultaneously another Palestinian stabbed to death a border policewoman.

The three terrorists were Bara Ibrahim Muhammad Saleh, 19; Adel Hassan Ahmad Anakush, 18; and Osama Ahmad Mustafa Atta, 19, of the village of Dir Abu Mashal, northwest of Ramallah.

Netanyahu noted the several steps taken by the Jerusalem government to prevent further attacks, including preparing to demolish the terrorists' homes, the revoking of Palestinian visits in Israel previously approved for the Muslim month of Ramadan, and police reinforcement of security arrangements and checking procedures in the plaza around the Damascus Gate, where the attack occurred.

A Palestinian from the flashpoint West Bank city of Hebron, initially thought to be a fourth assailant and was shot and wounded, turned out to be an innocent passerby, Israeli police said.

Israel accuses the Palestinian establishment of inciting the violence, including by glorifying attackers and supporting their families. Israeli security services also cast doubt on the claims by IS.

"This is an obvious form of collective punishment, it is not acceptable - all those who are using these permits to meet with their families and to be with them during Ramadan are doing so during the month, because most of the year they are not able to do so", Touma-Suleiman said.

Israeli authorities, meanwhile, say nearly 50 Israelis have been killed in attacks carried out by Palestinians over the same period.
