On climate, 'the U.S. is now left to a footnote'

But the weekly magazine reported that Trudeau and some other leaders rejected German Chancellor Angela Merkel's aggressive approach to isolate Trump over his rambling and mistake-filled June 1 announcement that the USA would withdraw from the Paris deal.

While acknowledging that Trump's ending of U.S. financing for developing countries affected by climate change was an important setback, he said France and other countries were looking at ways of compensating through multilateral development banks.

Trudeau spokesman Cameron Ahmad wrote in emailed comments that "the characterization in this article is incorrect".

The US states and cities committed to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, increase the share of renewables in the energy mix or to transition to 100% renewables. It then states that they "also discussed the upcoming G20 summit".

Speaking to reporters Monday after a weekend meeting with her G7 counterparts in Italy, Environment Minister Catherine McKenna dismissed the Der Spiegel report as an "incorrect translation".

Environment ministers from Japan and other major nations faced difficulties persuading the United States to reconsider its decision to withdraw from the 2015 Paris climate accord, on the first day of their two-day meeting in Bologna, Italy, on Sunday.

Greenpeace's worldwide executive director, Jennifer Morgan, said: "Paris is non-negotiable and the leadership shown by the G6 countries, along with the cities, states and businesses in the USA in moving the agreement forward swiftly is fundamental".

Pruitt was one of the Paris accord's most vocal opponents within the Trump administration.

If the USA follows through with its pledge to formally withdraw from the pact, which can not happen formally until November 4, 2020, the country would join just two others-Syria and Nicaragua-as non-parties to the agreement.

"The momentum around the Paris agreement is irreversible", McKenna said.

By GCR Staff0 CommentsStriking a posture of defiance against US President Donald Trump, the governor of the state of California has used a visit to China to pledge his commitment to the Paris Accord on climate change and to sign a cooperation deal with China on developing low-carbon cities and green technology. The U.S. will become the third country not to be part of Paris.

That came after Trump met the leaders of other G7 countries for their own summit in Italy.

A two-day meeting of environment chiefs from the Group of Seven club of industrialized democracies ended with the U.S. again disassociating itself from a statement underlining the importance of implementing the 2015 Paris deal on curbing carbon emissions. The Trudeau government committed to the same targets set by their Conservative predecessors: curb emissions to 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030.

Britain and Canada also did not sign the joint statement.
