Iran Launches Missiles Into Syria

Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford prepares to testify on Capitol Hill in Washington. Dunford said Monday

Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced on Sunday that it launched several missiles into Syria, targeting Islamic State fighters in retaliation for the attacks in Tehran on June 7.

The Revolutionary Guards are fighting in Syria against militant groups who oppose President Bashar al-Assad.

"Medium-range missiles were fired from the (western) provinces of Kermanshah and Kurdestan, and a large number of terrorists were killed and weapons destroyed", the statement said.

It did not immediately offer other specifics, other than to say the missiles were launched from Iran.

"A missile strike on militants' positions is a warning to terrorists".

"The spilling of any pure blood will not go unanswered", the Revolutionary Guards said in the statement quoted by Tasnim.

The attack last week, which included shootings and at least one suicide bombing, was on Iran's parliament and the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic.

The IRGC had vowed revenge for the attacks and accused Saudi Arabia of supporting ISIS in the operation. However, it stopped short of directly blaming the kingdom for the attack, though many in the country expressed suspicion Iran's regional rival had a hand in the attack. According to Iran, the militant groups were responsible for the twin terror attacks in Tehran about two weeks ago.
