Hammond: Britain is leaving customs union and single market

Having lost her majority, British prime minister Theresa May can not afford to alienate either "soft" or "hard" Brexiteers in her party.

The point is she is not a unifying figure any more.

Discredited, shattered and weakened after the catastrophic vote, the 60-year-old prime minister is now faced with overwhelming pressure from several prominent Conservatives, and other voices in Westminster and beyond to abandon her hardline stance.

When asked if a deal was in the making, DUP leader Arlene Foster told reporters in Dublin: "I think you know it takes two to tango and we're ready to dance".

The EU says it wants to avoid the return of a "hard border" with Ireland that would require passport controls and customs checks, but how that will be possible without Britain staying part of the EU single market or customs union is not clear.

Following tomorrow's meeting, talks will continue on a monthly basis throughout the summer.

Britain's Brexit ministry said on Friday that no deal could be struck on exiting unless the future relationship with the bloc was taken into account.

Meanwhile, the shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer has written to the government urging it to drop its "belligerent and reckless" approach to leaving the EU.

The government also said the extra legislative time was needed to pass its domestic agenda.

With May still hammering out the details of a post-election deal to stay in power with the support of a small Northern Irish party, there are fears of a disorderly exit that would weaken the West, imperil Britain's $2.5 trillion economy and undermine London's position as the only financial centre to rival NY.

However, the speech was cancelled following the Grenfell Tower tragedy in West London.

The government's current weakness has helped fuel criticism of its approach to Brexit, although pro-EU campaigners' hopes that it could rethink the decision to leave the European Union have come to nothing.

Arriving at a meeting of European Union finance ministers in Luxembourg on Thursday, Mr Hammond signalled his ongoing loyalty to the Remainer causes, telling his colleagues: "My clear view, and I believe the view of the majority of people in Britain, is we should prioritise protecting jobs, protecting economic growth and protecting prosperity".

Business chiefs have backed First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's call for the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to have a seat at the Brexit negotiating table.

Spin from sources close to Mr Davis over the weekend suggests that he is willing to make "major" concessions in accepting that timeframe on Monday, and in accepting that the initial discussions will not come up with a financial settlement but a means of calculating it - positions that have been widely acknowledged informally in Brussels for some time although the British had soken bublicly of their hope that the talks would be simultaneous, in parallel.

The Government said its primary focus is on the rights of European Union citizens living in the United Kingdom and Brits living on the continent.

We now know that at precisely 11:00 BST on Monday morning, nearly exactly a year after the Brexit referendum, the all important exit negotiations will begin.
