Confederation Cup: Ronaldo's Portugal held by Mexico

Moukandjo optimistic as lions battle Chile in Confederation Cup

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo reacts during the Confederations Cup, Group A soccer match between Portugal and Mexico, at the Kazan Arena, Russia, Sunday, June 18, 2017.

Portugal had an early effort controversially disallowed by the video referees but they eventually took the lead after 34 minutes through Ricardo Quaresma after a mistake by Carlos Salcedo let Cristiano Ronaldo through on goal.

After a stray touch in what is usually a scoring position for him, Ronaldo caught out the Mexican defence with a lovely reverse ball for Quaresma who showed composure to mug the goalkeeper and tap it home.

The lead wouldn't last long, as Javier Hernandez extended his lead at the top of Mexico's all-time goalscorer list with a typical finish from close range after some good work by Carlos Vela.

Hit the crossbar in the first half in the build-up to Portugal's disallowed goal.

Portugal seemed destined to claim the Group A points, but Mexico rallied again and equalized in added time when Hector Moreno rose highest to head in a corner. "In the end the result was fair as Mexico also played well".

The Real Madrid striker, whose club future has been the subject of media speculation after he was accused by Spanish prosecutors of committing tax fraud, which Ronaldo denies, set up Portugal's opener.

He skipped the post-match press conference which he was supposed to attend as the man of the match.

KAZAN, Russia (AP) - Portugal had a first-half goal against Mexico chalked off in the Confederations Cup after the action was reviewed on video.

Substitute Cedric Soares looked like being the European champions' hero with his 86th-minute deflected shot, but Moreno's header from a corner spoiled the Southampton defender's celebration of his first worldwide goal to deny Portugal victory.

Ronaldo carried the ball into the area but was surrounded by three defenders and he passed it to Quaresma, who was free from markers on the far side of the box.

There were concerns that the match could be suspended after warnings from Federation Internationale de Football Association against homophobic chants by Mexican fans, but they were only heard a couple of times during the match and did not cause any disruption.
