Berger wins at St. Jude Classic for second straight year

Rafa Cabrera Bello of Spain hits from a sand bunker on the 11th hole during the final round of The Players Championship golf tournament Sunday

Graeme McDowell finished with a two under par round of 68 before heading for Wisconsin and the US Open on the back of a tied-27th finish.

A birdie on the 15th saw Berger move clear of the pack, which at one point included nine players tied for the lead.

He picked up three birdies on the front nine and eagled the par-five 16th to go into the weekend poised to strike for a second career win to go with his 2008 Canadian Open title.

Cabrera Bello was one of five players to finish two shots behind Berger, along with Americans Billy Horschel, Braden Thornberry, Chez Reavie and Kevin Chappell.

They were one stroke in front of overnight co-leader Stewart Cink, who carded a 68 for 132, with Ben Crane, victor of this tournament in Memphis, Tennessee, on 133 after a 65.

"I would just say that this is a great golf tournament and I want to be ready to play, compete this week", Mickelson said on Thursday. "I'm really proud of the way I played today".

"The good news is that my physical game is there and I should be able to find the mental toughness here soon", Mickelson said. She calmly made a 25-footer for the victory.

Lexi Thompson buckled down the stretch and missed a four-foot putt to win in regulation, forcing her to return to the 18th tee with Jutanugarn and Chun for a playoff.

Phil Mickelson was also in the mix on Sunday, but veered off track with a triple-bogey on the 12th hole to trickle back.

Jodi Ewart Shadoff of England (69) was one shot back in fourth place.

Schwartzel, who came into the week having missed two of his last three cuts after finishing third at the 2017 Masters, shot 65-66 in the first two rounds at TPC Southwind to get to 9 under and with the 36-hole lead, tied with Sebastian Munoz and Chez Reavie.

Scott McCarron, who won in Iowa in 2016, was second at 13 under after shooting a final round 66. He's now ranked 137th after 12 events this year, but he has four top-25 finishes including a recent T13 at the Texas Open to help his confidence.

Marco Dawson and Stephen Ames finished at 207.
