At impasse, Cosby jury goes back to work on verdict

The jury tells the judge that it "cannot come to a unanimous consensus on any of the counts". After 9 p.m., the judge said 12 hours of deliberation was long enough - and then instructed them to quit for the day. He will return to the courthouse Friday morning for the fifth day of deliberations.

These seven men and five women continue to work in a small room to determine if a man who was once one of the most famous in the world will stay a free man or become accustomed to Pennsylvania's penal system.

O'Neill's instruction to the group to keep working was delivered as part of what is known in Pennsylvania as "Spencer Charge" - a last admonition to the jury that it is important to reach whatever verdict it can in a given case. "If after further deliberations, you are still deadlocked on some or all the charges, you should report that to me".

The jury says it's deadlocked on the charges, but has continued to deliberate.

Later in the day, he called on the judge to declare a mistrial.

At around the same time, Attorney Gloria Allred who is defending some of the alleged victims said she is not losing hope.

They told the judge they were deadlocked on all three counts of aggravated indecent assault. Cosby is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting Constand at his home outside Philadelphia in 2004.

The charges could put the 79-year-old entertainer in prison for the rest of his life if he's convicted.

This is published unedited from the IANS feed. One required the jury to find that Constand could not "consent", another that she was "unconscious", and a third that Cosby "administered an intoxicant".

In it, he claimed Constand showed no ill effects from the 1½ Benadryl pills he gave her to help her relax, and that she never objected to his behavior during the 2004 encounter at his home.

In 1995, it took a Los Angeles jury four hours to acquit American football star O.J. Simpson of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman.

"We have really seen Mr. Cosby get the justice he was looking for in Montgomery County", Wyatt said. In those interviews, Cosby admitted to sexual contact with Constand and said they had previously had a romantic encounter. According to the Associated Press, the judge told them to keep trying to arrive at a decision.

Constand accused the comedian of drugging her with three blue pills before proceeding to fondle her breasts, put his hands into her trousers, and place her hand onto his erect penis during a 2004 encounter, according to an affidavit.

Cosby publicist Andrew Wyatt spoke outside the courthouse saying the deadlock shows Cosby is not guilty.

Constand was the women's basketball team manager at Cosby's alma mater.

Constand, meanwhile, appeared as the prosecution's key witness, telling jurors that Cosby gave her three pills he suggested were herbal, before taking advantage of her disorientation to sexually assault her.

"He is not Cliff Huxtable", she said, referencing Cosby's dad role on his acclaimed 1980s sitcom "The Cosby Show".

He did not take the stand in his sexual assault trial.
