Xi snubs Sharif in Astana over China duo's killing in Pakistan

India, Pak become full members of SCO, Modi takes veiled dig at Islamabad

In his address at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit at Astana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called for coordinated efforts to counter the menace of terrorism. He said concerted efforts are required to find a solution to recruitment, training and financing of terrorists.

PM Modi also expressed his gratitude towards the other member countries that supported India's membership to SCO.

The bloc's summit was hosted by the Kazakhistan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev at the independence palace, where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif were also present. All members described India's accession to SCO as historic and said it would strengthen security and promote regional cooperation among member countries.

The prime minister in his speech at the summit also congratulated India which has also achieved the membership. Its two-day summit, which kicked off on Thursday in Astana, focuses on issues related to cooperation in the fight against global terrorism, security, and the situation in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

They exchanged greetings when they were in the leaders' lounge for the reception at the Astana Opera organised to welcome the leaders participating in the SCO Summit.

He said energy, education, transport, agriculture, security, development and trade would be the top drivers in India's ties with the SCO.

The SCO, headquartered in Beijing, was founded in 2001 and comprises China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan as full members.

Asian rivals India and Pakistan on Friday formally joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a security bloc spearheaded by China and Russian Federation, despite bilateral tensions bubbling over Kashmir.

The reason for the boycott was India's concerns over the $50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), headed by Chinese President Xi, and which passes via Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
