'Wonder Woman' wows box office with US$100.5 million debut

Wonder Woman Opens to a Powerful $223 Million Worldwide

Jenkins beats out previous record-holder Sam Taylor-Johnson, whose Fifty Shades of Grey's brought in $85.1 million Valentine's Day/Presidents Day weekend.

After hitting cinemas on Friday (June 2), the superhero movie starring Gal Gadot raked in $223 million (£172 million) globally, including a huge $100.5 million (£77.8 million) at the USA box office.

Now, various stars have taken their time to praise and congratulate Gadot and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkin's on an excellent superhero movie, and this includes Marvel star Chris Evans. With Wonder Woman setting the box office alight with a $100 million USA box office opening, talk has already turned to the now-inevitable sequel.

Director Patty Jenkins talks about Gal Gadot's casting as Wonder Woman. The previous mark was Sam Taylor-Johnson's Fifty Shades of Grey, with $85.1 million U.S. in 2015. While Wonder Woman the movie was a look back at where it all began, the studios will now focus on the present and future of the superheroine. The 45-year-old filmmaker says her doubts were cleared when she saw the actress in action, reported Playboy.

According to all the box office numbers slowly coming out on Sunday evening, the Gal Gadot-led flick - in its first weekend in theaters - is KILLING the competition and already making history!

Wonder Woman is the first female-led superhero film to be directed by a woman.

Wonder Woman is a prequel (of sorts) to DC Comics' 2016 superhero film, Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice. "The story will take place in the USA, which I think is right", she said. "I think the result of this movie is going to really define what the future of Wonder Woman is in the movies". Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Nick Kroll, Thomas Middleditch, Jordan Peele, and Kristen Schaal toplined the voice cast of the animated adventure about two students who hypnotize their principal into thinking he's a super hero.

Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" moved to the third place with an estimated Dollars 21.6 million. The latest MCU movie has grossed $355.4 million domestically so far for a global gross to date of $816.6 million.

For now, we can all bask in the glory that was Wonder Woman, as the DCEU finally finds its footing. And this in a summer season that was down 9% from past year going into this weekend.
