Trump acknowledges for first time he's under investigation

Comey disputes Trump statements

"You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

Rosenstein's statement started a whole new round of speculation as people attempted to divine its meaning and its timing and its goal, whether or not it was meant to discredit some particular story, all stories generally or some future story yet to be published.

Tensions are building inside the Justice Department as Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein contemplates whether he will become a witness in the ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 United States elections. "The Department of Justice has a long-established policy to neither confirm nor deny such allegations", Rosenstein's full statement read. Another official disputed that Rosenstein pushed for Sessions' recusal.

At a ceremony last month to welcome Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand, the Justice Department's third-ranking official, Rosenstein joked awkwardly about being at the center of criticism since taking office, according to people who were in the room.

It was unclear whether his tweet about being under investigation was based on direct knowledge or new media reports that suggest Mueller is examining whether the president obstructed justice by firing Comey.

The officials who described the financial focus of the investigation spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

It was not clear whether the president was basing his tweet on direct knowledge, or on reports this week that special counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether he obstructed justice by firing Mr Comey last month amid the Russian Federation investigation.

"Failure to follow these protocols could result in criminal or civil penalties, and could form the basis of legal claims, legal presumptions, or jury instructions relating to spoliation of evidence", the memo warns former Trump transition team members.

Congress seeks Comey memos and tapes

Why Rosenstein would suddenly make that comment, or any comment, after having made no comment to story after story attributed to anonymous sources, remained a mystery.

Rosenstein has been overseeing the Russian Federation probe since shortly after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself. Comey's firing likely will be part of that probe.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the investigation, and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller to oversee it in the wake of Comey's ouster.

Trump's tweets came after the top lawyer for his transition team warned the organization's officials to preserve all records and other materials related to the Russian Federation probe.

The order from the general counsel for the transition team casts a wide net on documents that could shed light on ties between Trump's presidential campaign and representatives of Russia's government.

It also asks former transition officials to retain records related to five former Trump campaign associates: former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, his deputy Rick Gates, former foreign policy adviser Carter Page, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and Roger Stone, a longtime Trump adviser.

The White House has directed questions for details to outside legal counsel, which has not responded. The first time he told Trump was in his first meeting with the president before the inauguration on January 6.
